Massage and Emotional Wellness
From PTSD to Depression, Hands-On Work Offers Relief

Emotions are stored in the body. We all can feel when we are stressed and our neck feels tight or when our stomach feels upset but it often takes more awareness to connect our emotions to what is happening in the body. We can carry emotional baggage in our bodies for years without even being aware of it. This is where massage therapy can really help bring awareness and facilitate release and healing. - Lauren Monroe Allen

Anxiety
Anxiety can be a freestanding disorder that radically impairs a person’s quality of life. It can also develop as a part of a complicated health challenge. In either case, welcomed touch in the form of massage therapy has been seen to be an effective treatment component. Results show it can be effective for patients with generalized anxiety disorder. It was also seen to decrease anxiety scores in hospital settings and among caregivers of patients with cancer. Additional studies have found that massage with and without aromatherapy improved anxiety among patients in palliative care and in those receiving dialysis.

Depression
Several studies found massage therapy benefits for people living with depression, both as a freestanding disorder and as a part of a complicated health situation. A systematic review found that aromatherapy massage was substantially more effective than aromatherapy alone for this population. One study found clearly better results for people with major depressive disorder receiving Swedish massage compared to a sham treatment. This is important because it helps delineate between the effect of the bodywork and the positive effect of spending time with an attentive caregiver. Both are useful, but in this situation the massage was more powerful.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Massage therapy is often recommended for refugees, veterans, and survivors of torture, if people are comfortable with touching and being touched. Participants in these studies reported reductions in pain, tension, anxiety, irritability, depression, and other negative aspects of living with this complicated and challenging disorder.

This is just a brief overview of some of the work that has been done in the context of massage and mental and emotional wellness. The field of massage therapy research is growing quickly, and each new study helps us understand more about how we can use massage therapy to promote our health and how to integrate massage therapy with conventional health care.

Brain Health Protocol

Brain Vitale™ + Ultra DHA - Nootropic optimal brain health support for cognition, mood, and brain tissue structure and function.

Brain Vitale™ is a comprehensive formula that contains a variety of natural compounds vital to maintaining brain health and function. Your brain is made up of an estimated 100 billion cells called neurons, with trillions of connections—called synapses—between these cells. As we age, the structure and function of these neurons may naturally become compromised which can affect memory, learning, concentration and the ability to focus. Factors such as stress, suboptimal blood sugar regulation, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain nutrient deficiencies can affect brain cells and cognitive ability. Benefits include improved cognition, mood and memory.

Support for recovery from brain and nerve injuries (stroke, concussion, sciatica & various neuropathies)
OmegAvail™ Ultra is a high-potency omega-3 fish oil product, providing 600 mg EPA and 400 mg DHA in each two softgel serving, along with the digestive aid lipase for enhanced absorption. In order to maintain optimum health, the body requires a variety of different fats. Two of these—omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids—are essential. As a result of industrialized farming practices and modern food processing technology, the American diet is very high in omega-6s, but low in omega-3s. Correcting this imbalance through foods and supplements can be beneficial for the entire body.

Benefits include
• Healthy joints
• Robust immune function
• Hydrated skin and lustrous, shiny hair
• Cardiovascular health
• Positive mental outlook and balanced moods
• Clear thinking, memory, and cognitive function.

Beautiful Water

How much water should you drink daily? No single formula fits everyone. But knowing more about your body's need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day. Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Your body depends on water to survive. Every day you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women. These recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages and food. About 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks. Getting enough water every day is important for your health. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones.

Water helps your body:

- Keep a normal temperature

- Lubricate and cushion joints

- Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues

- Get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements

- Transport nutrients and other compounds

As a major component of the blood, water helps move glucose, water-soluble vitamins, minerals, other nutrients and some medications throughout your body. Water is also important for maintaining your mental health. Dehydration may increase your risk of anxiety, depression, and fatigue among other unhealthy mental states. Many studies show that drinking more water may benefit weight loss and maintenance.

I like to fill a canning jar with fresh spring or alkaline water. Then add fruits, vegetables and herbs. They’re an extra treat to snack on as you drink your water. Let them infuse overnight or for several hours. Use flavors that make your taste buds smile. Enjoy!

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups oat flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups almond milk (or milk of choice)
Juice of 1 lemon (this goes in the milk)

Did you know? The average American eats about eight pounds of fresh strawberries a year – and with them, dozens of pesticides, including chemicals that have been linked to cancer and reproductive damage, or that are banned in Europe.

Non-organic strawberries tested by scientists at the Department of Agriculture in 2015 and 2016 contained an average of 7.8 different pesticides per sample, compared to 2.2 pesticides per sample for all other produce, according to EWG’s analysis.

USDA tests found that strawberries were the fresh produce item most likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues, even after they are picked, rinsed in the field and washed before eating. For these reasons, in 2021, strawberries are once again at the top of the Dirty Dozen™ list.

03/21/2021

Collagen is a special type of protein that accounts for as much as 30% of the body’s total protein. In particular, it’s a primary structural component of connective tissue. It constitutes 75% of skin, 70% of ligaments, 65-80% of tendons, 50% of cartilage, 30% of tooth dentin, 16% of bone, 10-11% of muscle, and is also part of the structure of arteries and veins. The amino acid composition of dietary collagens is very similar to those in human collagens, making dietary collagen peptides ideal for supporting body collagen turnover and renewal. These processes go on continually, so it’s important to ensure the body has enough raw materials to build healthy new tissue.

How to Use
• As a dietary supplement, mix 13 grams (approx. one scoop) with eight ounces of water per day, or as directed by your health care practitioner. For ease of mixing and best consistency, add powder prior to adding water or other liquid.
• Collagen should not be the sole source of protein, but should be incorporated as part of a diet that contains various complementary proteins. It is considered non-allergenic, a property explained by the fact that it is pre-digested and consists of small peptides that do not have a tri-dimensional shape, and thus does not generally trigger protein allergies.
• Collagen peptides may be added to smoothies, protein powders, or foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, lemonade, cocoa, dairy or non-dairy milks, yogurts, dips, salad dressing, soups, sauces, mashed potatoes/cauliflower, casseroles, and desserts.

Additional Benefits:
• Maintenance or increase in lean mass.
• Blood pressure support.
