I'll be leading a Virtual Concussion Discussion this Tuesday (1/14) for CranioSacral Practitioners at 6pm.

🧠 What we'll cover:

We will talk about when to treat them, when to wait and when to refer out. We will learn about the varying degrees of concussions, what is happening in the brain down to a cellular level during a concussion and why symptoms manifest as they do from individual to individual. The information provided is distilled down from Marianne Sisco, PT CST-D, teacher and developer of the Upledger Concussion class.

➡️ How it'll work...

It often takes a team of therapies working together to heal. CranioSacral Therapy releases the tissues and helps normalize and balance the central nervous system, but oftentimes cannot help the brain repattern, so other therapies are also needed to retrain the brain.

Many of the families I work with see providers like OT, PT, speech therapists, chiropractors, and others.

And, sometimes, when someone gets on my table, I know it isn't me they need to see, but someone else. I send many clients to Chinaberry Acupuncture in the Kinetikos Healing Collective. Melea is a an acupuncturist (among other things!) who I trust sending my clients to. Melea also offers a fascinating service, Realization Process, which is like acupuncture without needles. If you or someone you love is looking for an acupuncturist in Lawrence, I highly recommend Melea! You can find more about her at her website, https://chinaberryacupuncture.com/

When it comes to healing, it often takes a team approach. I work with a lot of kiddos and CST is often the missing link.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) releases the tissues and helps normalize and balance the central nervous system, but oftentimes cannot help the brain repattern, so OT, PT and speech therapy are often needed to retrain the brain.

Here are a few places I recommend to families looking for additional therapies:

⭐️ Chiropractic - Restore Chiropractic & Rehab and The Chiropractic Experience (great for kids and adults!)

⭐️ OT/PT: Sound Speech Therapy and PK Therapy LLC

I'll highlight other people and places I trust in future posts, too. There are some incredibly talented people out there, and when you get the right combination of support, *miracles* can happen.

Are there any resources or therapies you're searching for? Send me a message or comment below!

This post is focused on the “real life” aspect of what can happen in adulthood when you experienced Adverse Childhood Experience’s (ACE’s) as a kiddo.

Some of us don’t even know we have early childhood trauma and are walking around affected by it. This might look like being overweight but feeling like it’s impossible to lose weight, or it could be something like the unexplained panic that seems to come from nowhere. Or maybe it’s what drew you to smoking ci******es or drinking as a coping mechanism.

In SER (SomatoEmotional Release), we can begin to access some of these deep-rooted energy cysts, and over time, open up to more healing, vitality, and health.

Here’s a little more context on the research…..

Research links early trauma and other adverse experiences in childhood to physical, psychological and intimacy issues in adulthood.

In my previous post, we talked about what ACE’s are (all kinds of things could be considered “adverse” in childhood - from feeling abandoned to being exposed to inappropriate material at a young age, to something as common as divorce or separation.

Research is now showing us how ACE’s are linked to chronic health conditions (both physical and psychological), such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, anxiety, depression and addiction.

Childhood trauma is common among ALL races and socioeconomic statuses.

There are some pretty astounding statistics for individuals who experienced 4 or more ACE’s based on a recent study*. Individuals with ACE scores of 4 or more are:

-11.1 times as likely to become intravenous drug users
-7.2 times as likely to become alcoholic
-6.6 times as likely to engage in early-life sexual in*******se
-3.6 times as likely to be depressed

*Pubmed article about enduring effects of abuse and related adverse experiences in adulthood: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3232061/

In my last post I talked about what Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) are and how common they are. Today I want to talk about the long-term effects ACE’s can have on the brain, body, and nervous system.

The toxic stress that accompanies Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) can impact every system in the body - here are a few examples of what ACE’s can change:

🧠 how the brain develops
🫁 how the body responds to stress (i.e. your nervous system response)
😥 are linked to chronic health problems (like depression, heart disease and obesity), substance abuse and mental health disorders in adulthood

Adverse childhood experiences are far more common than you might think. According to the Center for Disease Control -

✔️ 1 in 6 adults have experienced 4 or more types of ACE’s
✔️ At least 5 of the leading 10 causes of death are associated with ACE’s
✔️ Preventing ACE’s could reduce the number of adults with depression by up to 44%!

➡️ We’ll look at practical examples of what this means in real life next week.

💡You can learn more about ACE’s and research conducted by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente here: https://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/aces/index.html #:~:text=Overview,the%20body%20responds%20to%20stress

The terms "trauma" and "stress" get thrown around a lot. In this post I want to break down how common Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) are, and what they might look like.

ACE's are actually quite common. According to The Cleveland Clinic, in a study of adults, 60-80% reported at least one type of Adverse Childhood Experience.

Kids' brains are like sponges, absorbing everything. They take in everything - what they see, what's not said, cues from their environment, behaviors, how the adults are treating eachother, etc.

Anything that exceeds someone's capacity (or ability) to cope could be perceived as a threat to their system. For kids, these "threats" could either turn into an ACE or contribute to a higher likelihood of experiencing an adverse childhood experience.

Here's a list of common ACE triggers:
- divorce or separation
- discrimination
- disrupted living environment
- parental mental illness
- neglect
- living in poverty
- Substance use disorder
- Witnessing violence in the home or community

Why is all of this important? My next post will explain more!
