SWMC, along with Region 3 MERC (Medical Emergency Response Center) and local EMS, participated in a mass casualty exercise held by Fort Sill this week. Mass casualty exercises are designed to test emergency management response in a realistic and stressful environment to identify any strengths or weaknesses. Perhaps the single most important thing we can do to protect ourselves and others from illness and infection is maybe the simplest thing: wash our hands. December 1-7 is National Handwashing Awareness Week, an annual reminder that good hand hygiene is essential to good health. We should always wash our hands when they are dirty, before eating, while preparing food, and after we cough, sneeze, blow our nose, or use the bathroom. Handwashing with soap and water can stop the spread of germs. Clean hands prevent you from getting and spreading germs that cause everything from gastrointestinal illnesses to respiratory illnesses.
