He emphasizes that damaged mitochondria impair cells' ability to efficiently produce energy through oxidative phosphorylation, which is essential for normal cellular function.

When mitochondria fail, cells shift to fermenting glucose and glutamine to survive, even when oxygen is present a process historically known as the Warburg effect. According to Seyfried, this metabolic change is not merely a characteristic of cancer cells but may actively drive malignant behavior.
