In a 1996 interview filmed near the Mayan temples of Palenque, Mexico, Terence McKenna spoke about language and its power. His concern was not only about substances themselves, but about the word “dr*g.”

McKenna argued that the term groups very different substances into one vague category. Prescription medications, plant compounds, pain relievers, and p$ychedel!cs are all labeled the same. According to him, this flattening of meaning makes careful discussion difficult and often emotional.

He believed that language shapes how society thinks. If words carry fear or stigma, public understanding follows that tone. For McKenna, refining language was part of cultural change.

Psychiatrist Stanislav Grof later supported a similar idea, preferring the phrase “non ordinary states of consciousness” instead of “altered states,” arguing that wording influences perception.

McKenna’s broader message remains part of ongoing academic debate. The way society names experiences affects how they are studied, regulated, and understood.
