This year we made a significant change to how we handle our own healthcare - and we’ve been sitting with whether to share it publicly for a while.
We made the switch to CrowdHealth, a crowdfunding model for healthcare. For us, after years of paying premiums for a plan we rarely used and finding the experience of actually using it more frustrating than helpful, it felt like the right question to ask: is there something that fits our life better?
Two months in, I had a real test. I needed diagnostic imaging - a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, and pelvic ultrasound. Through CrowdHealth’s negotiated self-pay rates, the total was $450. No denials, no pre-approvals, no maze to navigate. Just care when I needed it.
It works for us for a few reasons: we’ve done the math on what we were paying versus what we were actually using, we have savings to cover that first $500 if something comes up, and we have each other as a clinical sounding board when we need to navigate a decision. That last one doesn’t require a medical degree, just having a provider you trust. Which, if you’re here, you may already be building.
We want to be clear: this isn’t the right path for everyone, and we’re not suggesting it should be. But we do think it’s worth knowing the question exists.
What’s your experience been? We’d love to hear it in the comments. And if you’re curious about the specifics of how CrowdHealth works, send us a DM - we’re an open book.
(We do have a referral code that offers a discount if you decide to join, but that’s not what this post is about. Education first, always.)
