Check it out! One of our residents, Alyssa Barré, M.D., and one of our physicians, Vince Prusick, M.D., recently published an article with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Two years ago, Rosalie took the first steps on a life-changing journey at Shriners Children’s Lexington.
Diagnosed with sacral agenesis and bilateral clubfoot foot deformities, Rosalie’s feet were turned inward so severely she could not walk unassisted or even wear regular shoes.
The West Virginia teen first came to Shriners Children’s Lexington in 2020 after years of care elsewhere. The medical team discussed various treatment options, including reconstruction surgery and serial casting, but ultimately Rosalie and her family decided that amputation was the best course forward.
Her surgery, performed in May 2024 by Janet Walker, M.D., in collaboration with the team at , was followed by two additional procedures to address issues with her residual limbs.
In November 2024, Rosalie was fully recovered and learning to walk with her new prostheses designed by our in-house Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services team.
Rosalie then spent a couple of weeks in Lexington at Ronald McDonald House, visiting the medical center every day to work with occupational therapists and physical therapists. She learned to walk and do ordinary things many of us take for granted including doing laundry, making lunch and climbing stairs.
Today, Rosalie is thriving. She gets to wear her favorite shoes — . She’s dancing. She’s even a part of the cast of Shrek the Musical at her school.
At her most recent appointment, the 16-year-old asked to upgrade her prostheses. With the help of a locking device, Rosalie can now adjust the feet of her prostheses in order to wear high heels. How cool is that?!
It’s been incredible to see just how far Rosalie has come and we know she’s just getting started 💖

Though they never had children of their own, Harold and Georgia cared deeply about children and families. Their support of Shriners Children’s went beyond financial contributions.
Jerry said Harold had been a Roadrunner for some time, personally transporting children and families to and from medical appointments to ensure they could access care.
“They didn’t just believe in the mission,” Jerry said. “They lived it.”
That belief ultimately shaped their decision to leave a gift that would continue caring for children long after they were gone.
