Lexington's Emergency Winter Weather Plan has been extended through February 3rd, providing critical expanded shelter capacity, free Lextran rides, and enhanced outreach to protect our most vulnerable neighbors during extreme cold. With 216 additional beds now available at the temporary winter shelter on Versailles Road, our community is working together to ensure no one faces these dangerous temperatures without access to warmth and safety.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention is extending activation of the Emergency Winter Weather Plan. The community’s Emergency Winter Weather Plan will remain activated for today (Monday, January 26th) through and including Tuesday morning (February 3rd). The OHPI will monitor forecasts and update as appropriate.

The Emergency Winter Weather Plan provides a coordinated response for times when extreme cold weather creates additional, immediate need for expanded capacity to assist persons experiencing homelessness in Lexington. Extreme temperatures often force persons to seek shelter who may not otherwise seek assistance.

Under activation of the plan:
🏠 Emergency shelters operate with additional capacity and relax previous restrictions
🚍 Lextran will provide free fixed route rides to shelter
🚗 Expanded outreach efforts will work to notify individuals of weather and facilitate access to shelter

This year, a temporary winter shelter located at 1306 Versailles Road adds 216 additional beds for adult men and women, operating between November 15th, 2025, and April 1, 2026. Individuals can access the shelter from Versailles Road only; no entrance is permitted via Nancy Hanks Blvd. Signage at Versailles Road will direct individuals the shelter entrance.

For pedestrian safety, we have established a fenced walkway that will guide residents to the intake area of the shelter. Resident vehicles should be parked in the front lot of LFUCG’s property. Individuals are warned against parking vehicles on private property, as vehicles may be subject to towing by the owner. Check-ins are welcomed 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. We strongly encourage providers and prospective residents to review information in the attached Winter Weather Plan document in advance for familiarity with rules and requirements.

Lexington's housing crisis has left our 10 shelters struggling to meet basic needs—we urgently need beds and furniture to provide safe refuge for our neighbors without homes. Your donation to Caritas Care Solutions directly provides essential furnishings that transform emergency shelter space into places of dignity and rest for Kentucky families and individuals in crisis. Starting tomorrow, every contribution helps us fill critical gaps and offer hope to those who need it most.

I’m ready to support Caritas Care Solutions on December 2, 2025 during Bluegrass Gives. Learn more about Caritas Care Solutions and all the other organizations participating in Bluegrass Gives.
