Be the Evangelist- Your Voice Could Change a Career

You know talent when you see it.

What you may not realize is how powerful your voice can be. When you forward a resume, make an introduction, or mention someone’s name in a meeting, you’re not just helping. You’re advocating. You’re shaping careers. You’re being an Evangelist.

Recently, I shared with a hiring manager a few key insights about a colleague. A few days later, I got this email message:
“My interview went well, and I wanted to let you know he mentioned my name came up in conversation and referred to you specifically—so THANK YOU for the support and vote of confidence.”

That’s the ripple effect of speaking up.

These moments matter. They build trust. They open doors. They change lives.

So, readers, here’s my strong invitation to you.
If you see someone worth advocating for—say something. Be the Evangelist. Be the one who nudges a career forward.

Service isn’t just a word. It’s eye contact. It’s dignity. It’s advocacy. It’s showing up.

I’m rolling off the board of PADS, a nonprofit that provides shelter and services to our homeless neighbors—and I’m filled with the value of service.

From my Patagonia ultra run to raise funds and late-night shelter visits, I’ve seen the heart of PADS up close. Their new fixed-site shelter—a refurbished hotel—will offer shelter and services under one roof. It’s visionary and I am excited for this next era of PADS history.

Sometimes we hesitate. We think, “If I apply to more than one role at the same company, will I look flaky? Like I don’t know what I want?”

I had a recent coaching conversation around this.

My client had an upcoming interview with opportunity #1 at Company X and didn’t want to apply to opportunity #2 at the same Company X.

She said:
“I saw that other role and it does look amazing. I’m worried it’ll seem like I’m job-hopping or not focused if I apply to both.”

I said:
“Actually, applying to multiple roles at the same company isn’t a red flag—it’s a strategy. You’re not being greedy, you’re being intentional. You like this company and really want to land there. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket - on one role at this company.

She said:
“But won’t it look like I’m unsure of what I want?”

I said:
“Not if you tell your story. Show how each role connects to your bigger vision—your growth, your strengths, your next chapter. It’s not about chasing every opening. It’s about showing how both these roles align with your future desires.”

Takeaway:
So go ahead, hit that apply button on those other roles! Just be ready to explain why each one fits your growth path. That’s not indecision—it’s strategic.
