Congratulations to Brian Burgess, DDS for receiving the Care Like Crazy Award!

A colleague shared these kind words about Brian.
"We all have grown accustomed to seeing Dr. Burgess on the nursing units or in the doctor’s lounge talking with staff and colleagues and handing out cool pens with fancy features (we all want the one with the fidget spinner!). But also, we all always count on him without fail. If the patient is having anesthesia for another procedure, he will work around the surgeon’s schedule so the dental procedure can be done at the same time.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a patient in the CCU, who was not able to be discharged until after the Thanksgiving holiday, chipped a crown. This was not causing any issues to her health, but was sharp and an annoyance, on top of the multitude of annoyances that come with being in isolation in the CCU. She was reluctant to bring up what she felt to her care team, but her son mentioned it to her RN who informed me.

At 3:30 p.m. that same Wednesday, I happened to run into Dr. Burgess who was about to leave for the holiday and asked if he would be willing to see her. I expected him to say no given the hour and the situation, but as always, he was more than happy to help.

Around 4 p.m., I saw him heading up to the CCU with two heavy tackle boxes – “my mobile dental office,” as he calls them. He repaired her tooth that late afternoon and the patient was incredibly grateful."

Brian, thank you for the care you provide daily to your patients. You make a difference in the lives of others. We are honored that you are part of the Bryan Medical Staff.

Good news for coffee and tea lovers: your daily cup may be associated with some brain health benefits.

Long-term research has found that people who regularly drink moderate amounts of coffee or tea were less likely to develop dementia and showed slightly better memory and thinking skills over time compared to those who drank less.

While caffeine isn’t a magic solution, but in moderation, it could be one piece of the puzzle when it comes to keeping your brain healthy as you age.

Not all chest pain is the same. Pressure across the chest that lasts more than a few minutes or moves into the jaw or shoulder deserves your immediate attention. Brief, sharp or pinpoint pain often has a different explanation.

Bryan Heart’s Dr. Ross Pacini helps clarify how cardiologists assess these symptoms, why duration and location of pain matter plus when it is important to seek emergency care. Understanding these differences can help you know when to act and where to go for help.

For nearly two decades, Bryan Health has been home to a thriving NICU that started with a leap of faith.

Back in 2007, Dr. Albert Owusu-Ansah came to Lincoln to help build a NICU that did not yet exist. Alongside dedicated nurses and staff, he helped design the program, shape its care and welcome its first patients in 2008.

Today, our NICU provides advanced care for some of the smallest and sickest babies, including Nebraska’s youngest-born surviving infant. The team continues to add leading-edge technology and guidance from families through our Patient Family Advisory Council.

Read the full story and meet some of the people who helped build the NICU that cares for so many of our tiniest patients today.

Congratulations to Mary Johnson, PCT, for receiving the January Tulip Award!

Here is what a couple colleagues had to say about Mary:
"Mary was very patient with me when needed to give me my shower. She made me feel comfortable. We talked about good things about family. She took time getting me ready, she didn’t push me or hurry me to take my shower. She’s very friendly and nice! She also has a nice southern drawl."

Mary, thank you for the care you provide daily to your patients. You make a difference in the lives of others. We are grateful that you are part of the Bryan Medical Staff.
