Since 2019, our Blood Program has enabled our crews to begin transfusions during transport, ensuring patients in critical need can receive lifesaving blood before they ever reach the hospital.

Hundreds of patients have already benefited, and we recently surpassed a major milestone: over 1,000 units given. Learn more about the program and how we maintain an extremely low-waste model in our latest blog. https://ow.ly/ukjy50XFVLI

When was the last time you performed a surgical cricothyrotomy? 🤔

Surgical airways are a high-risk low-frequency procedure that can mark the difference between life and death. Join our friends from Hackensack Meridian Health for a Surgical Airway workshop as they review the indications, relative contraindications, overview of open surgical cricothyrotomy and an overview of needle cricothyrotomy. Participate in a hands-on training and a lung lab that will demonstrate the effects of various oxygenation techniques on fresh lungs in a vacuum chamber.

Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your knowledge and practice this skill!

Mechanical Ventilation Pre-Conference Offerings

We are thrilled to have not one but TWO mechanical ventilation pre-conference workshops for MATC 2026 - a basic course to provide foundational knowledge and new for 2026 an advanced course for those seeking to expand their understanding.

Just a Fancy BVM: While focusing on the ABC’s may seem straightforward, things can quickly get overwhelming when the “B” involves mechanical ventilation. Join our own Sam Matta as he unfurls the mystery and provides foundational knowledge of mechanical ventilation. What is Itime? Why is minute ventilation important? What is the difference between AC and SIMV? We will answer all of these questions and more through a mixture of lecture and hands-on manipulation of the ventilator. After setting the foundation we will utilize lung-simulators and case studies to solidify your newfound knowledge and prepare you for your next intubated patient. At the conclusion of this workshop you will appreciate that the ventilator is just a fancy BVM!

Beyond the Basic BVM: Deepen your understanding of mechanical ventilation with this advanced airway workshop. Join us as we go beyond the basics, providing a deeper understanding of ventilation strategies tailored to individual patient physiology. Topics will include APRV, pressure-volume relationships, waveform analysis and lung compliance vs. resistance. Participants will engage in hands-on ventilator simulations and test lung scenarios to reinforce concepts and enhance clinical decision-making.

Whether your venue is EMS or Critical Care Transport the concepts in these workshops will expand your knowledge and enhance your practice!!

About MATC

The Mid-Atlantic Transport Conference (MATC) launched in the spring of 2019. Clinicians and educators at Johns Hopkins LifeLine and University of Maryland ExpressCare worked together to develop a local conference with a regional scope that provided continuing education for their transport teams and for neighboring teams as well.

Our goal was to bring the regional transport programs together and provide educational programs led by physicians, critical care nurses, critical care paramedics, and content experts in our allied health community. We also wanted to build bridges with our local critical care teams to share educational resources and develop content mutually beneficial for everyone.

As we begin 2020, the success of the initial MATC conference has led to some exciting changes. We have moved the dates for this year’s conference to the fall in an effort to make scheduling easier for more attendees. We have added a pre-conference day to provide in depth focused sessions as well as recertification classes. We have also partnered with IA Med to help us provide more streamlined processes with conference registration and CE approvals. We have joined IA Med’s CE Collective to provide monthly continuing education programs that will stretch MATC’s ability to provide CE opportunities throughout the year.

Our initial plan to put together an educational conference has quickly evolved into a collaborative program with year round content and input from a growing number of regional teams and the State EMS Office. Possibilities beyond educational content may be on the horizon as the continued bridge building amongst teams brings shared missions and challenges to the planning table. We are amazed and grateful at this opportunity to work with the best in our field and to share everything with our colleagues throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
