Continuing on with celebrating our midwives, check out this incredible photo of Shannon delivering a baby en caul with dad assisting. En caul means the amniotic sac was intact at the time of delivery. It’s a pretty rate occurrence and such a miracle to see. Shannon has been a Midwife for 4 years. Shannon, why did you choose midwifery?
-I chose midwifery because I wanted to be with women through every step of their care. I enjoy forming relationships with them and their families as they seek care through all life stages, including well woman care, pregnancy and birth, and everything in between. I’m also a little crunchy and integrating holistic care with modern medical care is my jam :)

Happy Midwife Week. Today we are featuring Laurel: Midwife for 5 years
What does it take to become a Certified Nurse Midwife?
To become a CNM you start in nursing school and get a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) prior to applying to Midwifery school. Many schools require a minimum of 2000 hours of nursing experience. Midwifery school is a masters program and takes 2-3 years of full time course work and clinical hours to complete. We graduate with Masters of Science in Nursing, but in order to become board certified in Midwifery we then sit for our certification exam that is given by the American Midwifery Certification Board and only then can we hold the title Certified Nurse Midwife. 📷: Oaks Photography. Happy Certified Nurse Midwife Week!!! This week we will feature our amazing CNMs and share more information on how they care for moms and babies. This is Abby Nichols, she has been a CNM for 5 years. Abby: Midwife 5 Years. Abby, can you explain why a patient might be interested in a midwife? She shares:
The midwifery model of care is a patient-centered, holistic approach to pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and well-woman care. Midwives are experts in healthy pregnancies and provide low-intervention prenatal and birth care. The midwifery model emphasizes trusting, supportive relationships between midwives and their patients, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and birth experience. Midwives value respectful maternity care, upholding dignity, autonomy, and the right to make informed choices. Our CNM group promotes evidence-based practice, using the latest research and guidelines to inform care recommendations and facilitate informed decision-making. Midwives collaborate with obstetrician colleagues when needed and often co-manage care for patients with additional risk factors. These patients benefit from enhanced monitoring of moderate and high-risk conditions by our OB and MFM colleagues while continuing to feel supported in their individual birth experiences
