“After moving to a new city and knowing basically nobody, drag helped me find a place within my new community. Not only that, but it helped me heal my inner child by celebrating things about myself I was conditioned to suppress, growing up as a flamboyant boy in the South. My creativity, my exuberance, my sensitivity – – all of these are aspects of myself that have been celebrated since I started performing. Through a drag, I have found a community and been fortunate enough to have been given a platform, so I would be remiss if I did not use that platform to help that community!”

Led by the AIDS InstituteExit Disclaimer, National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD) is observed each year on September 18 to focus on the increasing number of people who, because of major advancements in HIV treatment, are living long, full lives with HIV. The awareness day also calls attention to the unique health and social needs, as well as the challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care among people who are aging. This year’s theme, “Protect Our Aging Populations: Meeting New Challenges to Live Longer and Improve Lives!”, aims to emphasize the need for prevention, research, and data focused on the aging community and increase medical understanding of the impact of HIV on the natural aging process.

More than half of people living with diagnosed HIV in the United States and dependent areas are aged 50 and older. Some were diagnosed later in life, while others have lived with HIV for many years. Support services are available through health care providers, local community centers, or HIV service organizations.

“As a titleholder and a drag performer, we have a platform that comes with an obligation to the communities we represent. We are the ones on the stages, in the spotlights, and on the mics. Use your voices and art to educate and protect those around you while we still have the opportunities.Get tested, get PrEP, and get informed. Undetectable = Intransmittable.”

August 25, 2024, is National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NFHAAD). NFHAAD is a day to engage faith communities to work together for HIV/AIDS education, prevention, treatment, care, and support, and to reduce and eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Faith communities are encouraged to learn about the status of HIV funding in their state, nationally, and internationally, and take action to sustain and increase HIV prevention, treatment, and care services for all who require them. Faith communities fighting for freedom and fairness together can end HIV-related stigma and discrimination—one day, each year, until there is a cure!

Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is August 20. Founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition. SHAAD is a day that individuals, communities, and organizations can unite to call attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the South.
This year’s theme, “Power to the People!”, is meant to be a reminder of the immense power in one’s voice, one’s history, one’s joy, one’s dollar, and one’s vote. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
We at Diversity Family Health Arkansas are committed to helping end new HIV infections in Oklahoma. Get tested, know your status.

“As children, we dream about being superheroes who can fly, read minds, or have super strength. Then we reach adulthood, we see that the world needs a different type of superhero. The power to reach out to members of the community that need love and support in a time of need. I feel drag helped me be the superhero I always wanted to be. I can live a normal life by day, then become a superhero by helping with blood drives and HIV awareness.”
