FORMULA SHORTAGE
This is a stressful time for many parents across the country. There’s no better way to describe it. Absolute stress.
It can be so disheartening, anxiety inducing, and frustrating to find the formula your baby is using right now.
Please consider all of the above options (in the DO column) to find formula that will work well for your baby! There are SO many support groups and initiatives to source formula for families.
I really want to stress the Do NOT portion.
DO NOT make formula at home.
--Homemade formula is not sterile. The composition of homemade formula is not nutritionally balanced or sufficient for infants. Many homemade formula recipes contain harmful ingredients like honey or raw milk. The shelf-life of homemade formula is incredibly uncertain, presenting an environment for significant bacterial growth. Giving a baby homemade formula risks malnutrition and infection.
DO NOT water down formula to make it last longer.
--This can alter the electrolyte imbalance of the infant and may also alter the nutrient composition of the formula. Always prepare formula exactly as the instructions specify.
DO NOT give your baby raw animal milk
--Raw animal milk can carry harmful bacteria like Salmonella, E coli, and Listeria. Infants and children are at a much higher risk of getting sick from these bacteria. A common misunderstanding is that the pasteurization process reduces nutritional value, causes lactose intolerance or allergic reactions. Evidence shows that pasteurization does kill harmful bacteria and preserves the quality and longevity of milk.
DO NOT use expired or recalled formula
--These formulas have a much higher risk of harmful bacteria, including Cranobacter.
Please reach out to your pediatrician with any concerns you have regarding your infant’s formula.
If you have a long term goal of relactating, or need some help learning how to safely prepare formula, please reach out to a lactation professional.
Share this with anyone that’s searching for formula and let’s get these babies fed!
