Last weekend in my trauma informed yoga group students learned about two types of trauma:

Shock Trauma- An unexpected terrorizing event that happens too fast, too soon and overwhelms our nervous system. Examples of shock trauma include car accidents, violence,illness, abuse or natural disaster.

Developmental Trauma- Occurs from an ongoing misalignment between a child and its primary caregiver. Examples of developmental trauma include neglect, chronic abuse,or lack of adequate mirroring. Developmental trauma if often intergenerational.

Students learned a little about what happens to the brain when it experience trauma.

Five key brain areas involved in trauma include:

1. Fear Center ( Amygdala)
2. Interception Center (Insula)
3. Memory Cener (Hippocampus)
4. Thinking Center( Prefrontal Cortex)
5. Self-regulation Center (Cingulate Cortex)

Students were assisted through calming breath work and relaxation poses. Through breathing, movement, grounding and relaxation, students learn how to find safety in their bodies, and regulate emotions.
