For Women’s History Month, we’re honoring the women whose hands carry history forward.

Across Ghana, the artisans we partner with are more than makers, they are mothers, teachers, leaders, and culture-keepers. Through weaving, beadwork, shea butter production, and textiles, they preserve ancestral knowledge while building stronger futures for their families and communities.

This month, we’re centering their voices, their journeys, and the legacy they are shaping; not just in history books, but in real time.

Stay tuned as we share their stories, their wisdom, and the powerful impact of women supporting women.

These trees hold more than fruit; they hold memory, survival, and the quiet strength of generations. Long before shea butter reached shelves around the world, it lived here, growing slowly under the West African sun.

For the women of Sabruka Shea Village, these trees are a source of dignity and independence. They gather the nuts by hand, just as their mothers and grandmothers did, transforming them through patience and ancestral knowledge into the pure shea butter we are honored to share.

When you choose their shea butter, you’re not just nourishing your skin; you’re helping preserve a living legacy.

This episode of Beyond the Marketplace took us to Ghana’s Upper East Region to spend time with the women of Sabruka Shea Village.

Watching them make shea butter the same way it’s been done for generations—by hand, with care and patience—was a powerful reminder of how much intention lives behind everyday products.

Their work supports families, strengthens their community, and keeps an important tradition alive. This is what fair trade looks like when it’s rooted in real relationships and respect.

If you’d like to see the full journey and learn more about the women behind the craft, watch the episode and explore their shea butter on our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/23Ml9EsFuas

From Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean, the African diaspora carries memory, resilience, and culture forward.

Across oceans and generations, our stories didn’t disappear; they moved, adapted, and survived.

This map reminds us that Black history is not confined to one place; it lives wherever our people live.

What part of the diaspora do you feel most connected to; by ancestry, culture, or lived experience? Share in the comments.

Black history didn’t stop, it traveled.
Across oceans. Across generations. Across communities.

Join us this month and every day as we celebrate, honor, and carry the legacy forward.

Two really beautiful days in Navrongo & Bolgatanga with my daughters; slow moments, real conversations, and so much learning.

We spent time with the basket weavers of Ayebase Enterprise, visited the women of Sabruka Shea Village, and connected with artisan Yaye Ibrahim. Just listening, observing, and being present with the people behind the craft.

These two days reminded me why this work matters; and why we mustn't give up.

2025 reminded us why we do this work.
Because fair trade isn’t a trend; it’s a commitment.

To artisans.
To communities.
To dignity.

This year, your support helped sustain artisan livelihoods across Ghana, improve learning spaces through school painting projects, provide 110 reusable menstrual kits to girls, and deepen partnerships rooted in trust and tradition.

We traveled, listened, collaborated, and built, together.

Thank you for choosing people over profit; every time.

At Ayebea’s Sankofa Marketplace, we believe that dignity is the real luxury. When you choose fair trade, you’re choosing people over shortcuts, care over convenience, and long-term impact over quick gain. Every handmade piece represents respect for skill, fair wages, and the humanity behind the work.

The Adinkra symbol Akoko Nan teaches us to lead with care. It reminds us that true leadership is gentle but firm; grounded in responsibility, protection, and doing right by others, even when no one is watching.

Sankofa; we stand on tradition and move forward with wisdom.
