Difficulty Asking for Help When Needed

Your child may have difficulty asking for help, even when they need it. They might become frustrated, stop a task, or wait instead of reaching out. This is not a lack of motivation; it may reflect developing communication or self-advocacy skills.

Why this happens:
Asking for help requires recognizing a need, knowing how to communicate it, and feeling comfortable doing so. Some children need explicit teaching and practice to develop this skill.

Try this at home:
✅Model simple phrases like “help” or “help please”
âś…Pause during activities to allow opportunities for your child to request help
âś…Use visual or gesture supports if needed
âś…Acknowledge and respond to all attempts to request help

Learning to ask for help is a skill that develops over time with modeling, practice, and support. đź’™

Session 4 of our 6-week Culinary Program starts this Monday, May 4 🍳 and we still have a few spots open.

This program supports teens (14+) with developmental disabilities in building practical cooking skills, independence, and confidence in the kitchen. Participants work at their own pace in a structured, supportive environment led by a Cooking Instructor from The Culinary Playground and supported by our Occupational Therapist.

Each session focuses on real-life skills like kitchen safety, following directions, and preparing simple recipes through hands-on learning. đź’™

Small group sizes allow for individualized support, and space is limited for this upcoming session.

Tuesday Tip: Building Listening Skills for Better Communication

April is a time to promote Autism Awareness and Acceptance by supporting communication in all its forms. Listening skills are one part of communication and can be supported through structured and engaging activities.

Here are strategies you can start today:
✅Get Their Attention First: Gaining your child’s attention before giving directions can improve their ability to follow instructions.
âś…Use Clear and Simple Language: Short, specific directions are often easier for children to understand.
âś…Incorporate Interests: Using preferred activities can increase engagement and participation.
âś…Use Multi-Sensory Cues: Pairing verbal directions with gestures or visuals can support comprehension.
âś…Celebrate All Communication: Recognizing verbal and nonverbal communication supports overall communication development.

Remember: Communication skills develop at different rates, and individualized support helps children succeed.

If you have questions about supporting your child’s communication and development, our therapists at Stepping Stones Pediatric Therapy Inc. are here to support you!

Tatyana McFadden: Strength Beyond Disability

Tatyana McFadden was born with spina bifida, a condition that left her paralyzed from the waist down. As a child in an orphanage, she had no wheelchair and moved using her hands, but her disability never stopped her determination to keep going.

After being adopted and given new opportunities in the United States, she discovered wheelchair racing and turned it into her passion. What began as a challenge became her strength.

Tatyana went on to become one of the most successful Paralympic athletes in history, winning multiple gold medals and major marathons around the world. Her disability did not limit her achievements—it became part of a journey defined by excellence and perseverance.

Her story reminds families that with support and determination, children can achieve greatness beyond expectations. đź’™

Difficulty Coordinating Both Sides of the Body

Your child may have difficulty using both sides of their body together, such as catching a ball, cutting with scissors, or getting dressed. You might notice one side leading while the other assists less. This is not uncommon, as coordination skills develop over time.

Why this happens:
Bilateral coordination is the ability to use both sides of the body in a coordinated and organized way. This skill supports many daily activities and develops gradually through movement experiences and practice.

Try this at home:
âś…Practice simple bilateral activities like clapping or rolling a ball
âś…Encourage reaching across the body during play
âś…Break tasks into smaller movement steps
âś…Repeat activities regularly to build familiarity

Consistent opportunities for movement and practice can support the development of coordination skills over time. đź’™

Tuesday Tip: Encouraging Emotional Regulation Through Routine

During Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, we recognize the importance of creating supportive environments that help children feel safe and regulated. Consistent routines are commonly used to support emotional regulation in children.

Here are strategies you can start today:
âś…Create Predictable Daily Routines: Consistent schedules can help children anticipate what comes next and may reduce anxiety.
âś…Use Visual Supports: Visual schedules or cues can improve understanding of expectations and transitions.
âś…Prepare for Changes: Giving advance notice before transitions may help reduce distress.
âś…Model Calm Strategies: Demonstrating strategies like deep breathing can help children learn ways to regulate emotions.
âś…Honor Individual Needs: Children respond to different supports, so it is important to adapt strategies based on the child.

Remember: Emotional regulation skills develop gradually and benefit from consistent support and modeling.

If you have questions about supporting your child’s growth and emotional development, our therapists at Stepping Stones Pediatric Therapy Inc. are here to help!
