Armani Williams: Racing Toward His Dreams

Armani Williams is a professional NASCAR driver who races in national stock car series. He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when he was very young and worked hard to follow his dream of becoming a race car driver.

Armani uses his racing career to help raise awareness and acceptance for people with autism and to show that differences can be strengths.

His story reminds kids and families: with support, hard work, and belief in yourself, you can chase your dreams. 💙

🎉 Weekend Win!

This week, one of our amazing 16-month-olds reached an exciting milestone! They started babbling with multiple-syllable sounds for the very first time! 🗣️✨

These early speech sounds are building the foundation for communication, language development, and self-expression. Every babble, every sound, is a step toward sharing thoughts and connecting with the world. 💙

We are so proud of this big step and can’t wait to celebrate the next sounds and words!

Non-Candy Easter Fun Can Still Be Exciting 🐣

Easter doesn’t have to mean sugar overload. For some children, too much candy can contribute to energy fluctuations and may make self-regulation more challenging. Thoughtful alternatives can support both fun and development.

How to support your child:
-Choose non-candy items like stickers, small toys, or crayons to encourage fine motor skills and creativity
-Add familiar snacks (crackers, popcorn, dried fruit) to provide a more balanced sensory and eating experience
-Include sensory-friendly items like play dough or fidget toys to support sensory regulation
-Follow your child’s interests to increase engagement and participation
-Keep egg contents simple to reduce overwhelm and support attention and processing

A thoughtful mix of surprises can turn Easter into a fun, engaging, and developmentally supportive experience for every child 🌷

Sarah Stup, an acclaimed author with autism who types to speak, has never let communication differences hold her back. At eight years old, she discovered the power of typing to express herself and found a love for reading and writing. With support from her teachers, family, and community, Sarah learned that challenges can become opportunities to grow and shine.

Today, she writes books like Do-si-Do with Autism and Paul and His Beast, helping children, families, and educators understand autism and celebrate differences.

Sarah’s story reminds us that every child has unique strengths, and with encouragement, creativity, and heart, they can achieve amazing things.

Difficulty Starting Tasks

Your child may struggle to begin simple tasks like getting dressed, homework, or cleaning up.
It may look like they’re ignoring you—but often, they just don’t know how to start.

Why this happens:
Task initiation is an executive functioning skill. For some children, the starting point feels overwhelming or unclear, so they pause, avoid, or wait for help.

Try this at home:
-Give one small, clear step (“Pick up 3 toys”)
-Use a simple checklist or visual guide
-Start the task together, then step back
-Use gestures or cues instead of repeating instructions

Small steps build independence. 💙

Tuesday Tip: Cross Crawl Exercises for Kids

Cross crawl exercises are simple, fun movements that can support your child’s development. These activities encourage coordination between both sides of the body, helping improve movement, focus, and skills related to learning.

Here are easy ways to try them at home:
-March Opposite Hand to Knee: Have your child march in place, touching their right hand to their left knee, then switching sides. Go slow at first, then build rhythm.
-Elbow to Knee Taps: While standing, bring one elbow across the body to meet the opposite knee. This helps with balance and core strength.
-Crawling Games: Encourage hands-and-knees crawling through tunnels, under tables, or across the floor. This is a natural cross-lateral movement.
-Seated Cross Crawls: For younger children or beginners, try this while seated, reach one hand across to touch the opposite knee.
-Add a Beat: Turn on music and have your child move to the rhythm. This makes it more engaging and supports timing and coordination.
-Keep It Playful: Turn these into games like “follow the leader” or obstacle courses to keep your child motivated.

Remember, these movements may look simple, but they play an important role in building coordination, balance, and attention skills over time.

If you have concerns about your child, our therapists at Stepping Stones Pediatric Therapy, Inc. are here to help your child thrive!
