Breakthrough research featuring contributions from our very own Eric Arias, MD, medical director of our Neurosurgery and Spine division, was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine!

A landmark study, the STEM trial, which involved 310 patients, is significant because it provides strong evidence for the benefit of middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). It points to a potential paradigm shift in cSDH management, which could move toward less invasive options. The trial results will likely inform clinical guidelines and practice, promoting the use of adjunctive MMA embolization to improve outcomes for patients with cSDH.
