My name is April Durant, RDHAP, and I am the owner and sole practitioner of Brightwork Dental Hygiene Services. I wanted to take a few moments to introduce myself and provide some information on the unique mobile services I provide for homebound, aging, and special-needs patients in our community. The goal of an RDHAP (Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice) is to reach the homebound and more difficult-to-access patients who are unable to make regular dental office visits and provide them with proper oversight and preventative services. Many of our elderly population have had years of dental work completed only to leave their dentition neglected later in life. It is a daunting task to transport the aging to their dental visits and can be both costly and time consuming. Upon proper medical clearance, patients will receive oral cancer screenings, professional dental cleanings, and mobile dental X-ray services. My mobile dental equipment is easily set up either bedside or in a separate designated area. After an examination with low-radiation digital X-rays and intra-oral images I am able to properly care for the patient in my scope of practice and refer any additional work that needs to be done. These images are key to properly diagnosing and communicating with nursing staff, caretakers, physicians, dentists, oral surgeons, and especially the patients themselves on the issues going on in their oral cavity. My goal is to leave no patient unable to receive proper oral hygiene care, and I hope that by working together, we can make a difference in our community.
