The 1970s invention that changed medicine forever with MRI scans

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, might be one of the most widely used tools in medicine today, yet it’s less than fifty years old. From cancer to brain injuries, heart disease, and bone infections, doctors rely on MRI scans to see inside the body without invasive procedures. More than 100 million MRI scans are performed worldwide every year, making it a cornerstone of modern diagnostics.

The story of MRI began decades before the first full-body scan. In 1952, physicists discovered nuclear magnetic resonance, the property of certain atomic nuclei to release electromagnetic radiation in a magnetic field. It wasn’t until 1971 that researcher Raymond Damadian realized this principle could detect cancerous cells because water molecules in tumors move differently than in healthy tissue. While this was a breakthrough, Damadian couldn’t yet turn it into a full-body image. That leap came from Paul Lauterbur, who created two-dimensional images using magnetic field gradients, and Peter Mansfield, who sped up the process with high-frequency pulses. By 1977, Damadian produced the first full-body MRI scan, bringing the technology closer to what we use today.

Modern MRI machines still rely on the same principles and coils developed in the 1970s, producing the familiar clunking sounds as electromagnetic pulses switch on and off. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRIs don’t use dangerous radiation, making them a safer choice for frequent imaging. They remain a vital, life-saving tool, showing just how one discovery can transform medicine.
