There are two kinds of fiber! Water-soluble and water-insoluble fiber and both serve important purposes inside of the digestive system.

Water-soluble, or mucilaginous, fiber helps retain water inside of the colon, keeping stool soft and easy to move through the colon. Water-insoluble fiber helps produce peristalsis inside of the bowel and move waste through smoothly. Different kinds of fruits and vegetables have different amounts of these different kinds of fiber. It’s important to diversify the types of foods you consume so you’re getting enough of both of these fiber types to help you maintain bowel regularity.

- Foods like pears, raspberries, oranges, avocados, all have higher water-soluble fiber contents.
- Foods like broccoli, chia seeds, and black beans all have higher water-insoluble fiber contents.

Fiber overall is vital to keeping your digestive system healthy and on track. Balancing your fiber-type intake can also help address unexplained digestive issues.
