PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair treatment involves drawing a patient’s blood, separating the plasma, and injecting it into the scalp to stimulate hair growth. This procedure uses the body’s own growth factors to help dormant hair follicles become more active, resulting in thicker, fuller hair over a series of treatments. While considered safe as it uses your own blood, potential side effects include pain, swelling, and temporary shedding.
What it is
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): A concentration of platelets, growth factors, and other restorative components derived from your own blood.
Mechanism: When injected into the scalp, PRP can help repair blood vessels, stimulate cell growth, and increase blood supply to dormant hair follicles, which helps promote hair regrowth.
The procedure
1. Blood draw: A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient, similar to a standard blood test.
2. Centrifugation: The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which spins to separate the plasma from the red blood cells.
3. Injection: The concentrated platelet-rich plasma is drawn into a syringe and injected into the targeted areas of the scalp with a very fine needle.
4. Duration: The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
5. Recovery: There is generally no downtime, and most people can resume normal activities immediately.
