Reporting from the Westin Long Beach at the 78th Annual California Society of Pathologists Conference, where I presented three abstracts featuring rare, complex, and diagnostically challenging cases.

Regardless of my deep commitment to medicine and my desire to practice with passion and peace of mind never in anguish, frustration, or under the pressure of financial limitations the reality is that many physicians feel the same way. It’s time to change the narrative.

For decades, countless brilliant clinicians have poured their entire lives into medicine, only to wait until retirement to finally live. And by then, the lifestyle they dreamed of is often overshadowed by age-related illnesses, burnout, and the emotional toll of years spent putting everything else first.

Right now, as you read this, many physicians are still stuck in doubt, fear, or negativity. They hesitate to take bold steps, even though they know deep down that their current path is unsustainable.

But here is the truth:
If you want freedom, options, and control over your future, you must build it.

This is deeply rooted in personal and cultural beliefs. In my hometown, parents don’t just pick names at random, children are named based on the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and birth, as well as the future their parents want to speak into their lives.

Most times, we carry two names: a Christian (usually English) baptismal name and an indigenous name in our local language.

My own name is Akudo Mercy. Akudo means peaceful wealth. Honestly, these names have shaped my life in ways I can’t even explain. Akudo began manifesting very early, and Mercy followed strongly.

Names carry power. They can guide, influence, and even direct a person’s path. So, when choosing a child’s name, don’t rush. It’s a spiritual decision.
