Daughters of Sick Parents

Daughters of Sick Parents A community page to connect those whose parent(s) have an illness. Hey! My name is ChelsWhoElse, or Chelsea, whichever works! Er, let me start at the beginning.

I’ve had sick parents for as long as I can remember. In elementary school, my dad was diagnosed w/ ALS + became paralyzed from head to toe. That same year, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. After chemo, radiation, and surgery, my mom ended up fully recovering. My dad wasn’t so lucky. He died when I was in college after 15 years with the disease, which is ironically awesome because most people with ALS die after a few years. Several years later, I thought the worst was behind us but then...my mom finds out that after 17 years in remission she has cancer…again! This time it’s stage 4 in her hip bone, sacrum, and sternum.

Don’t worry though - this isn’t supposed to be depressing. Since I’ve had a unique perspective of witnessing parental sickness as both a child + now as an adult, join me as I explore my thoughts + feelings giving advice, educational information and more to kids/teens/young adults who have parents with an illness. I’m not a licensed medical professional - just a real person going through a real experience. Thanks for stopping by!

My mom just turned 70! Eight years with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. First diagnosed in her early 40s in 1999. Didn’t know if we’d get to 70, but here we are.

Takeaways: Every day is a gift. Illness is wild. Modern medicine is incredible. Some things don’t make sense. We’ll never know what it all means. Cancer blows. But cancer communities are powerful.

Pain and joy exist at once.

Sending love to anyone who lost their mom. Who is grieving their mom. Who wants to be a mom. Who struggles with anything related to the word mom. It’s all valid. And if your mom is here, give her a call 📞.

all smiles (and frowns, because ) for the 5K Walk & Remember. love seeing who people are honoring through the custom shirts, signs people make, and conversations being had… dog bandanas said “grief is ruff.” this year I volunteered at the raffle table, took pics of people crossing the finish line, and hopped on stage to MC the raffle. it’s surprisingly wholesome to see people coming together. see you next year! ✨

being yourself makes sense to me. but what does this really look like? as I transition through a new life change, some suggestions I’ve received lately include: listening to the music you loved when you were growing up, showing up places by yourself (even if a friend is coming in an hour, owning that first hour by yourself,) cooking a recipe you haven’t had since childhood etc. how do you “be” you? how do you show your weird?

This is everything. Fun fact, I have this quote engraved on my iPad. Which is really like the modern day version of carving your initials into a tree with blood. Right?
