The Wall Street Journal wants to have a conversation about therapy culture being “out of control” and I have thoughts. Is therapy language being used more casually now? Absolutely. And sometimes that can water down terms that carry real clinical weight. I’ll give them that. But the subtext of this piece, that young people are just being dramatic and over-pathologizing normal life is exactly the kind of dismissiveness that keeps people from getting help. 👀
When you look at what younger generations are actually dealing with: economic instability, the release of the Ep****n fiIes, political instability, active sh00ter drills as a normal part of school, a pandemic that disrupted their development, unregulated social media access, and escalating climate disasters - reaching for the word “trauma” doesn’t seem THAT unreasonable. Maybe the language isn’t the problem. Maybe the conditions are. 🤷♀️
