Every behavior happens for a reason. In ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), we look at the function of a behavior to understand why it’s happening, not just what it looks like.
Here are the 4 main functions of behavior:
🔹 Attention – Your child may act out or seek your reactions (positive or negative) just to get your eyes, words, or engagement.
🔹 Escape or Avoidance – Sometimes behaviors happen to get out of or delay something they don’t like (e.g., transitions, tasks, demands).
🔹 Access to Tangibles – The behavior is a way to get something they want: a toy, food, or preferred activity.
🔹 Sensory/Automatic – These behaviors feel good internally (like hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning)—they serve a sensory need, even if no one else is involved.
👉 Understanding the why helps us build more effective supports, replace challenging behaviors with helpful ones, and improve daily life for your child and family.
