created by Stepanie Lozano

Ancient Maya writing was found in the Maya area which constitutes the southern part of Mesoamerica such as the Mexican states of Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Chiapas, and Tabasco as well as in Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. The ancestral Maya had developed a writing system that communicated to the viewer historical, political information, and their worldview. The Aj Tz’ihb, or scribe, would paint or carve glyphs on various types of material culture such as ceramic vessels, stone monuments, and ancient books called codices. This workshop is designed to learn the basics of how to read ancestral Maya hieroglyphic writing as well as creating one glyph with a medium called model magic and markers. We will explore several glyphs that teach us about Maya worldview inspired from Maya monuments and ceramics.
This workshop is free to the public IWC community and begins at 7pm and ends at 9 pm. Each participant will take home their creation.
