Alma Family Services

Alma Family Services Providing community-based services for those with special needs including emotional, physical and/or development delays.

Alma Family Services was established in 1975 in East Los Angeles by parents to provide, along with other purposes, a comprehensive range of multilingual community based services for families including those with special needs. Since its inception Alma has a “whatever it takes” tradition of multilingual, culturally competent services to meet client’s needs in their homes and residential facilities, schools, social and vocational programs, juvenile facilities, and other settings as appropriate. In addition, Alma provides eight interdisciplinary mental health outpatient office locations serving all age ranges including those with substance abuse in the cities of Long Beach, Walnut, Pico Rivera, El Monte and East Los Angeles and which also serve adjacent communities. Alma also provides mental health services which are functionally integrated within community health facilities in the greater East Los Angeles and San Gabriel communities including The Wellness Center at the Historic General Hospital Center in Boyle Heights. Child and Family Development programs include the Mac Laren Children Center, Centro Estrella Family Resource Center, Preschool Center, Socialization and Community Integration Training, Family & Peer Support and a unique Aquatics Center with programs for children, adolescents, adults and older adults with special needs. Alma Family Services also provides services to “Youth at the Crossroads” in terms of risk of gang involvement. Alma is the lead agency for a collaborative Gang Reduction Youth Development Program (GRYD) serving youth and families who reside in the Boyle Heights/Hollenbeck area of the City of Los Angeles. GRYD programs represent a historic effort on the part of the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office to reduce crime rates and gang membership in specific communities with a high degree of gang activity and violence. Alma’s Probation Youth Community Reentry Program offers clinical supportive services for at-risk youth and their families following their release from probation camp. Services are focused on addressing delinquent behavior to reduce the rate of recidivism.

Alma is proud to be one of the founding Prevention agencies of the Gang Reduction
Youth Development (GRYD) Program, serving Hollenbeck (HB1, HB2a, HB3). For 15+ years, Alma has offered violence prevention, youth development, and community safety services, working alongside incredible partners to create lasting change. Last month, Alma was honored to be recognized by the LA Mayor’s Office of Community Safety (MOCS) for our GRYD Prevention work, alongside partners. The MOCS and its contracted agencies, like Alma, have contributed to remarkable 2024 Crime Stats:
✅45% decrease in gang-related homicides
✅48% decrease in gang-related shooting victims
✅Overall reductions in violent crime.

Yesterday, Alma stood with community leaders, interventionists, and city officials to celebrate this progress and reaffirm our commitment to a safer Los Angeles. This work is only possible through strategic partnerships and leadership of organizations like the Urban Peace Institute spearheading collaborative efforts such as the LA Violence Intervention Coalition. Thank you to the violence prevention workers and interventionists, and advocates making LA safer every day. Together, we’re promoting a safer and more peaceful city to ALL angelenos!

Alma has supported over 400 families and 1,300 individuals impacted by the wildfires to date. This wouldn’t be possible without the amazing partnership with Northgate Gonzalez Markets and the Gonzalez family that, through their UNIDOS Por Nuestra Comunidade campaign, contributed $120,000 in grocery vouchers to Alma’s Care Center. “We are profoundly grateful to the González family and Northgate González Market for their exceptional generosity and leadership in standing with our community. Their unwavering commitment comes at a crucial time, reinforcing Alma Family Services’ ongoing efforts to provide relief and vital resources to families impacted by the wildfires. As a true community leader, Northgate’s dedication is a powerful reminder that when we come together with compassion and purpose, we can create lasting change. We are honored to partner with them in bringing hope and support to those who need it most.” - Lourdes Caracoza, Alma’s President/CEO.
