Mainstream media is picking up the story about portrayal of disability in The Witches! Check out the New York Times article below which discusses the prevalence of the “disfigured villain” storytelling trope in film and its impact on kids.

“Monstrosity is somthing in all of us, not something out there in a bodily form different than our own” -Angela Smith, University of Utah, Director of Disability Studies

“The Witches,” a film in which Anne Hathaway’s character has disfigured hands, has resurfaced the debate over depicting evil as disabled.

Hello CATCH Community,

We are reaching out to address the representation of upper extremity differences in The Witches, a movie distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 22, 2020. We understand how this movie could make CATCH members feel.

Dr. Lightdale, Dr. Nelson, and CATCH staff would like to extend support. It is our goal to unite and empower children with hand differences. Please feel free to call the CATCH line at 323-361-2282/ X12282 or send an email to catch@chla.usc.edu to speak with CATCH staff. We are here for you, and remember, you are here for each other!

We would like to thank our friends at the Lucky Fin Project for bringing light to this situation with their “Call to Arms” video. You can find the video, as well as Anne Hathaway’s letter, shared below. In addition, check out the article linked below from Nicole Kelly and Sarah Tuberty’s Disarming Disability podcast to facilitate a conversation with your child about destigmatizing limb differences.

"Adaptive" Film Screening tonight! Free admission for CATCH members.

Wednesday, October 9, 8:00 PM at The Stronghold Climbing Gym.

"Jim Ewing – a Sterling Rope engineer and below-the-knee amputee – enlists professional climber, Maureen Beck – born without her left hand – to attempt the first all-adaptive ascent of the über classic and deeply remote Lotus Flower Tower (5.10 ) in Canada's Cirque of the Unclimbables. As their adventure unfolds, we see that the ability to adapt is universal and a common thread that unites us."
