Is it necessary to include self-feeding with a spoon or fork in standardized assessments? 🤔

Should a child’s self-help skills be considered delayed if they are not using a spoon or fork between 18-24 months old? 🤔

Is the use of a fork or spoon a suitable self-help goal? 🤔

As I travel the world to expand my knowledge of child development and early intervention on a global scale, I have noticed that the lack of consideration for cultural norms is a key aspect missing from current developmental standards, assessments, and “best practices.”

Cultural practices differ greatly based on location, time, community, and ethnicity, which makes me question the reliability of standardized assessments and educational programs.

Without a genuine understanding of cross-cultural differences, early intervention efforts may not be as effective as they could be in supporting children and families. We must do better in the infant mental health field to embrace cultural diversity and recognize its impact on child development and the families we work with.
