I live out my purpose as a yogi, Pilates Instructor, Meditation Teacher and a Well-Being Coach. I hold eight certifications with one message: everything is connected. The way we move, the way we rest, and the way we nourish ourselves, all contribute to how well we live. I coach you to connect to your core, to move from it, to hear and to understand it as your true essence. Seems obvious from this dude born on December 9th, right? But what might not be obvious is how we aren’t breathing optimally. As a matter of fact, we are not only breathing shallowly, but often through our mouths, and not taking advantage of our noses and full lung capacity!
Did you know that mouth breathing promotes stuff like dry mouth, infections and bad breath? (I’m not talking about deliberate mouth exhales which can help calm nerves.)
Our noses were made to be breathed through. They filter, moisturize and regulate the air we breathe. Nasal breathing promotes endurance, builds the immune system and even helps with cognitive function!
There can be about 13% dead air volume in our lungs, so full, deep inhales and exhales can push that out as well. (The Hundred, anyone?)
Shallow breathing leads to chest, shoulder and neck tightness, as well as weak core and intercostal muscles (those in between the ribs).
So, in honor of that dude who brought Contrology and Pilates to this world, heed his words and return to Life.
“To breathe correctly, you must completely inhale and exhale....Lazy breathing converts the lungs, figuratively speaking, into a cemetery for the deposition of diseased, dying, and dead germs...therefore, above all, learn how to breathe correctly.”
