Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on the ears! Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer and is strongly associated with UV exposure, which is why we often see these skin cancers on the face. Always wear sunblock, and see your dermatologist if you develop a growth that is not going away.

Did you know that having fair skin, red or blonde hair, blue or green eyes are all risk factors that increase you’re likelihood of being diagnosed with melanoma? This patient had a superficially invasive melanoma that she described as a mole that appeared on its own and had been increasing in size over the last 4 years. If you develop a new mole or have an existing mole that is changing, please see a dermatologist to have it checked!

Eczema results in poor barrier function in the skin. As a result, the skin can be more vulnerable to super-infection by bacteria or viruses. This patient had a herpetic viral infection on top of her eczema, resulting in ulcers and erosions in the areas of her body where her eczema was flaring. See your dermatologist to get help with managing your eczema!

Warts are caused by the HPV virus. There are more than a hundred different HPV types identified, some can cause skin cancer. The virus is contagious by contact and infects the bottom layer of your epidermis by getting into areas of micro trauma (breaks in your skin barrier). Treat your warts early to prevent them from spreading and growing very large.

According to the newspaper in which this photo was published, this monk is 90 years old. He spent most of his time indoors, in meditation, and rarely spent time outside in the sun. His skin exhibits very few features of extrinsic aging, and I would bet that he never got a skin cancer on his face!
