Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, have made history with a $2 billion donation to the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

This donation, the largest ever given to a U.S. university or academic health center, will enable the Knight Cancer Institute to operate as a self-governing entity under the new Knight Cancer Group. Dr. Brian Druker, who is known for developing the life-saving leukemia drug Gleevec, will serve as the group’s inaugural president.

The funds will be used to further research, diagnostics, and treatment of cancer, with the goal of creating a comprehensive, patient-centered care model. As federal research funding faces uncertainty, the gift is especially significant, positioning the Knight Cancer Institute as a leader in oncology.

This contribution builds on the Knights' long-standing support for OHSU, following previous gifts of $100 million in 2008 and $500 million in 2013, which helped foster further donations from others. In total, the Knights’ philanthropic contributions to Oregon’s public universities exceed $4 billion.

With this historic gift, the Knights continue to advance cancer research and treatment, setting a new benchmark for charitable impact in the field of healthcare. Their support reflects an enduring commitment to improving the lives of patients and transforming the future of cancer care.
