*TW Animal loss*

For those of you who don’t know the story, when I came up with the idea of Healing on Manes, I had everything. Except the horse. I was cold-calling places and sending emails and posting on Facebook. Somehow, I came to Wind Hill and met Jen. She shared my dream of healing through horses. She had just bought her dream property and she had exactly what I needed… a horse. She had Scotty.
Scotty didn’t always have the easiest life before Jen brought him home, but let me tell you… he had the best life a horse could ask for at Wind Hill. Jen and her daughter had known Scotty for years and knew him to be a kind and gentle soul who was wonderful at teaching and listening and she knew he would be perfect for our program. And how right she was.

Scotty made Healing on Manes everything it is. He taught me how to see life through a horse’s eyes. He taught me patience. He taught me to listen. He taught me what it meant to show up, no matter what.

Yesterday, November 7, 2025, Scotty was laid to rest.

Scotty was somewhere between 28-30 years old. He lived a life of love, especially the last 5 years at Wind Hill. At the end of Fall of 2024, I noticed he would be more annoyed. He wanted to rest more often. He became even more stubborn. He started to slow down some last winter… he wouldn’t play as much with his herd mates. Winters are hard on old bones. It wasn’t right to make him go through another harsh New England winter.
My friend Jordan sent me something that really hit home and here is my take from it.

He went out on a good day. It was beautiful outside. Just a little chilly but sunny and beautiful. He got to roam wherever he wanted to go and eat all the grass he ever wanted. Jen and I sat with him for hours, just watching and sharing stories. He must’ve eaten a bag and a half of carrots and got brushed with all his favorite brushes. He snuggled up with me and let me bother him with a few last photos. He soaked up all the love and attention. He went out on a good day.

I am so lucky that Jen shared him with me throughout the years. I love you Scotty. I hope you are forever eating grass and running free. 🌈 🐴

It’s been a while since we have posted here… 2025 brought many challenges in many different ways. My Master’s degree has consumed a bit more time than I expected, but throughout the year, I still found the occasional time to make it to the barn.

*TW Animal loss*

Yesterday was like every other in some ways. I arrived to the barn and his ears perked up as soon as he heard my voice. It made Jen and I laugh… because I haven’t been able to be around as much this year, but that didn’t matter. Not to our boy.

One of our most dedicated volunteers needs our help.

Saydra is a sweet, sassy, and animal-loving kiddo!

Saydra is the most outgoing, intelligent, and bright-hearted person I have ever met. She puts a smile on your face as soon as she walks into a room. She has been through far too much in her young life but dances through all of it and maintains a positive outlook. She gives back to her community and gives 100% to everything she does. But, she needs our help....

This past August, Saydra started to have bouts of dizziness and nausea, followed by weakness, and then fainting spells. Since then, things have evolved in a negative way. She is now having 40-50 non-epileptic seizures per day. After multiple emergency room visits and thousands spent on doctor's appointments, the only diagnosis they have received is "non-epileptic seizures from trauma."

Though Saydra has gone through more than her fair share in life, that diagnosis just isn't sitting quite right. Saydra's mom is a single mom doing everything she can to provide for her girls and make ends meet. Due to Saydra's medical condition, she has had to leave her job to take care of her daughter full-time. This is one of the best families I've ever met—resilient, strong, hardworking, and keeping a smile on their face through it all.

Saydra has experienced choking spells due to convulsing while she is eating, short-term amnesia where she has been unable to recognize even her own sister, and is suffering tremendously. She was discharged from the hospital with no medical equipment and without being pointed in a direction where progress would be made.

This family needs our help to raise funds to get more in-depth testing completed to rule out other diagnoses that might cause these symptoms, purchase medical equipment, meals, and everyday items that would make day-to-day life easier and more doable.

Scotty and I continue to work on Attachment and Detachment at liberty. This is the very end of our session, so he is getting a couple cookies. It is an amazing feeling to connect to your horse in such a way that they will be right by your side no matter what.

This is how all the little details get noticed. HOM's entire program is trauma informed. This means that in it's roots, our focus is relationships and communication. Why are horses so good at teaching us to communicate? Because they show all of these minute signs that we have to learn how to pay attention to. So many people in the horse world ignore what these subtle signs mean or chalk it up to bad behavior, which is also common practice when kids, or adults, are acting out ... we see it as simply that- acting out. Bad behavior. There is so much more to it

Sending out a huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to support our organization at the Suncook Valley Rotary Hot Air Balloon Rally ! And to the Rotary club for having us back year after year! We are so grateful for their support and our ability to be a vendor at such a fun family event.

We had an extremely successful weekend and gave tons of kids their first "tattoo"- even some whole arm and leg sleeves. We are so good that it was painless!

We saw a few Scotty stuffies go off to their new homes to be loved on and got to tell so many new people about our program. My favorite thing might be watching kids fall in love with Scotty without even meeting him in person- and then to watch it happen during sessions.... let's just say this job is very fulfilling.

I can't say thank you enough to our incredible team of volunteers: Natasha and her girls, Rielly Mann, Tamara Eells Bowne, Glenda, Sarah, and Rachel. I truly couldn't have done it without them.

Though we might be putting seeing clients on a pause for now, I know that on the other side of this 2 years, we will be able to offer so much more and make our services even more accessible to children and families.

T-22 days until my MSW program begins and I start my journey of working towards becoming a licensed clinical social worker. The long term dream? To open an entire animal assisted, nature & play based therapy center in central New Hampshire to help bridge the gap of mental health services offered to children.

Fundraisers like our Temporary Tattoo Booth at the Hot Air Balloon Rally and our Kris Kringle Horse Mingle help bring us closer to raising enough funds to make this dream a reality. All of the donations made during these events are tax-deductible and if you ever need a receipt for tax purposes, please let me know and I can happily provide one for you.

I can't wait to see you all at our next fundraiser!

Happy Summer ☀️
