✨Resident Spotlight: Bob ✨ Bob was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1935. He lived on a family farm along with his younger brother, Jim. The family moved to Speedway, Indiana a couple years later where his father got a job at Allison Transmission as a Tool and Die Maker. Bob graduated from Speedway High School in 1953 with an interest in all things mechanical. He was accepted to Purdue University and graduated in 1957 with a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering. He went through basic training at Fort Knox to operate tanks soon after graduating from Purdue.
Bob went on to work for General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio where he met his wife Janet, who also worked for G.E. They were married on October 14, 1961. The newlyweds were off to a new job with Westinghouse in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He soon had an opportunity to work on an exciting new project in Baltimore, Maryland, called NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application). While working on project NERVA Bob was responsible for the shipment of the first fully operational nuclear reactor from Baltimore to Area 51 for testing. Bob and Jan soon had their first son Brian in 1962. After a few years working on NERVA the young family was faced with the decision of yet another move. Bob decided a job with G.E. in Louisville, Kentucky, was the life he wanted for his wife and children. In 1977, the family moved to the Highlands near Big Rock where they own the home to this day. Bob made his last career change in 1984 when he joined The Corps of Engineers and retired in 2000.
Bob has had many interests over the years. The family always enjoyed being outside hiking, camping, and sailing. He and his wife traveled the country extensively to all four corners with family and friends as well as Great Britain and Europe. They visited many of our nation’s national and state parks over the years. Their sons are both married: Brian to Marnie, Mike to Terri. Bob has three grandsons – Rob, Leo, and Voss – from Brian and Marnie. Bob and Jan were married for 54 years. Bob moved into The Altenheim in 2024.
This bio was lovingly written by Bob’s family. We are so lucky to have him as part of the Altenheim community!
