Kentucky Senior Medicare Patrol Prevent, detect, and report Medicare fraud! louisvilleky.gov/SMP
This page is supported by ACL Grant .

SMP visits seniors wherever they gather, at senior centers, housing complexes, churches, and health fairs and talk about what they can do to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud. SMP trains Medicare beneficiaries how to protect personal information, identify errors on healthcare statements, recognize scams (like illegal marketing, providing unnecessary services, and charging for services that were not provided) and how to report medical fraud and abuse. This account is managed by the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. For more info go to www.louisvilleky.gov/health.

Don’t believe what you see on TV during open enrollment! The plans that are being advertised on TV often aren’t available to most people on Medicare or may not even be available in your area. If you see an ad for a plan that you think sounds amazing, rather than responding to the ad directly we suggest reaching out to your local SHIP to learn about it from a completely unbiased source.

Overwhelmed by the mass of Medicare information, plans, and deadlines? With the right help, you can find exactly what you need. State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free, in-depth, personalized, and unbiased counseling on complex Medicare issues, while 1-800-MEDICARE is the official federal helpline for general Medicare information and basic assistance.
Depending on your needs, you can use one or both to help you navigate Medicare during the Open Enrollment Period. If you'd like to learn more about SHIP, visit www.shiphelp.org.

Whenever we say that Medicare won’t call you, there are a few key exceptions. One of these exceptions is the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), which is happening now! If you receive a call or a letter about the MCBS during this time, you can contact 1-866-856-NORC or mcbs.norc.org to verify if you have been selected and if the contact was legitimate.

Medicare will not call to verify your Medicare number. They will also never threaten to cancel your benefits if you refuse to give it to them. This is a sign the caller is a scammer. If you get a call asking for your Medicare number, hang up.

If you did give out your Medicare number, don't panic. Contact the SMP to report it and get help on next steps.

Hospice is an essential benefit for Medicare beneficiaries – and unfortunately, even hospice is not immune to fraud. In the past few years, hospice fraudsters have used offers of free items such as nutritional shakes, meals, cash, and more to trick non-terminal beneficiaries into sharing their information and enrolling in a hospice program. Not only can this severely impact a beneficiary’s coverage, but it can also cost Medicare thousands of dollars per day they’re fraudulently enrolled.

to prevent a fraudulent hospice enrollment from messing with your benefits.
