It’s officially football season! From Friday night lights to college game day, here are FIVE ways to prepare your child for a game. 🏈🏟️🏈🏟️
1. Contact your local venue to ask about a sensory friendly space within the stadium, how to enter with minimum overload and an exit plan if it is time to leave.
2. Pending your child, frontload information - where we are going to park, the noise you may hear, what you may see, etc. Show social stories, small clips of the game in preparation. This is also a great opportunity to upload pictures on your child’s AAC device or whatever they may use for communication.
3. Bring all of your child’s favorite comfort items. This could be noise reduction headphones, crunchy snacks, favorite drink and fidgets.
4. When choosing your tickets, find a spot where your child can participate in heavy work and movement for breaks. This may be pacing in an area, going up/down the stairs, doing wall push ups.
5. Attend a less-stimulating game first, if possible. This could be a professional soccer game or minor league baseball game. Slowly acclimating to the environments may help when it comes time to attend a big game.
It’s the best time of the year! Comment below who you are cheering for this football season!
