UNC Health Southeastern observed Native American Heritage Month this week with daily activities including No Child Left Behind Tribute Day, Native Art and Expression Day, Native Heritage Day, Represent Your Tribe Day, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Tribute Day.

On Native Heritage Day, a group of teammates gathered for a group photo in their traditional Native American clothing.

Meet Pain Management Provider Crystal Berumen

Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Crystal Berumen has joined Interventional Pain Specialist Michael Abdou, MD, and the staff of UNC Health Pain Management Specialists at Southeastern Health Park. Conditions treated at the clinic include back and neck pain; diabetic neuropathy; peripheral neuropathy and disease-related pain.

Berumen earned an associate degree in nursing from Robeson Community College and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Grand Canyon University based in Phoenix, Az. She also earned a master’s degree in nursing with a family nurse practitioner emphasis from South University in Savannah, Ga.

“Previously a registered nurse with UNC Health Southeastern for nine years, I chose to become an advanced practice provider to have a greater impact on patient care by directly improving patient outcomes,” said Berumen. “Currently specializing in interventional pain management allows me to help patients regain mobility and functionality which improves their emotional well-being.”

UNC Health Southeastern To Reroute Entrances for Renovation Project

Beginning November 3, patients and visitors to UNC Health Southeastern’s Rust Tower will be rerouted to enter through Registration while the main lobby is closed for an upgrade project.

The lobby closure should last approximately six weeks, however, the overall project to upgrade the entire corridor is projected to last approximately 12 months. Once the lobby project is complete and re-opened, additional phases will impact travel through the main corridor to the hospital cafeteria. Visitors and patients will be directed to alternate routes through signage.

“Ms. Edens worked at UNC Health Southeastern from 1980 - 1994, having served as vice president and chief nursing officer,” said current Chief Nursing Officer Renae Taylor. “Her longstanding commitment to nursing practice and our mission helped shaped the culture here in ways that will be felt for years to come. Our sincere condolence to her family and all those she touched.”

Betty Lou Edens, age 94, of Lumberton, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025. She was born on March 9, 1931 to the late Frank Cox and Dola Watts. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edens her son, Charles Edens, Jr.
