Our blood is rich with a wide variety of cells and molecules. Some of the things that make up our blood are quite complex and difficult to remember. Others are quite familiar. Glucose and insulin are two of the more commonly discussed substances that we need in our blood.

Last year, UNC Health Southeastern screened about 1,200 Public Schools of Robeson County middle and high school athletes. Twenty residents from emergency medicine, family medicine, and internal medicine, along with faculty from pediatrics, orthopedics, and primary care, facilitated the event. It was a great community service event, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community in the future.

A sports physical, also called a pre-participation exam, is a checkup students get before playing school sports. Most middle and high school athletes need one each year. The goal is simple: make sure the athletes are healthy and safe to play.

UNC Health Southeastern is embarking on a journey to achieve Level 3 Trauma Designation. This credential will enable the health system’s emergency department to treat more patients locally who have a higher level of injury or trauma. This benefits patients by expediting care and allowing them to remain close to home where they can recover near family and friends.

Congratulations to Emergency Department RNs Ashley Hickman and Kaley Fields for earning their Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification!

Trauma is a major public health challenge that touches every community. Trauma-certified nurses are trusted to think fast and critically in high-stakes situations, recognize subtle signs of complications before they escalate, and intervene quickly and confidently using advanced clinical skills.

By achieving trauma certification, Ashley and Kaley have elevated their practice and strengthened the level of care we provide to our emergency department patients.

In late 2025, they both also earned emergency nursing certifications.

Congratulations on reaching this advanced milestone in emergency nursing and for helping us better serve our patients when every second counts!
