🌛 Nightfall in the Old Norse World 🌛

As kveldr descends: the Old Norse word for the deepening of evening, that liminal hour between sundown and full night. The world shifts into the realm of the unseen. In Norse thought, kveldr was not simply “evening”; it was the threshold where where Midgard brushed against the other Nine Worlds, when the hum of the landvættir, house spirits, and ancestors grew clearer in the still, darkness.

In the myths, the night belongs not only to Máni, who drives his moon chariot across the sky, but to the subtle forces that move beneath land and wind. The sagas speak of witches: völur, who practiced their craft in these liminal hours, calling upon úrðarþræðir (threads of fate) and chanting varðlokkur to summon guiding spirits.

In Norse belief, magic was woven through relationship:
• The landvættir who guarded field, forest, and fjord.
• The dísir, ancestral female spirits tied to protection and fate.
• The hamingja, the personal luck-spirit that grows through honor and right action.
• The nornir, silent weavers who guide the fate of gods and humans alike.

Tonight, You could ⤵️
🔥 Work with respect toward the spirits who share your land.
🌿 Use herbs found in saga tradition: mugwort for sight, juniper for cleansing, rowan for warding.
🕯 Speak your intent with breath and purpose, as the völur did when weaving their spells.
🌬 Listen closely, for in Norse belief, wind and rustle carried messages from the unseen.

⚔️ Týr: One Handed God of Oaths, Courage, and Sacred Order

On Týsdagr, we honor Týr, the steadfast god whose courage shapes the order of the worlds.

Týr is the quiet strength behind law, honor, and the binding force of oaths. He is the one who stands firm when others falter, the one who places duty above fear.

Born of the jötunn Hymir in some traditions, and counted among the oldest gods in others, Týr’s presence reaches deep into the ancient layers of Germanic lore. Some scholars call him the former chief god of the early tribes. The god who governs the order of things.

But above all tales stands one story:
The binding of Fenrir.

When the monstrous wolf grew too mighty for the gods to control, the Æsir forged the impossible ribbon Gleipnir, spun of six magical things: cat’s footsteps, woman’s beard, mountain-roots, bear-sinew, fish-breath, and bird-spittle. Fenrir was to be bound only if one god placed a hand in his jaws as pledge of good faith.

None stepped forward, except týr.
He knew the outcome.
He knew Fenrir would sense deceit.
He knew the price.

Yet he laid his right hand into the wolf’s mouth, and when the binding held, Fenrir bit down and tore it away. From that day, Týr became the One-Handed, the god who sacrifices for the good of all, the god whose honor is greater than his fear.

It is said that at Ragnarök, Týr will face the hound Garmr, and both will fall but not before the god of oaths fulfills his final duty.

• Clean your altar or home space as a gesture of order

• Practice integrity in a small but meaningful act

🌙 Máni: Silver Rider of the Night.

On Mánadagr, we turn our gaze to Máni, the luminous god who rides the night’s quiet roads. In the myths of the norse ,Maní a living presence—gentle, watchful, and ever-circling. Born of Mundilfari & Glaur, brother to Sunna, Máni guides the moon’s path across the skies, keeping time by its waxing and waning.

Yet his journey is never solitary🌑

It is told in Gylfaginning that Máni stole away or rescued the children Hjúki and Bil as they drew water from the sacred well Byrgir. Now they travel with him, their silhouettes felt in the shifting face of the moon. Poets saw in their presence the rhythm of tides, the turning of cycles, and the constant companionship of divine forces unseen.

But Máni is pursued, just as Sunna is chased by Sköll, Máni flees the wolf Hati Hróðvitnisson, child of Fenrir. Each night the chase continues, marking the ceaseless passage of moon and time. And at Ragnarök, it is foretold Hati will catch him, yet even then the lore hints at renewal, as another moon will rise, reborn from his line, lighting the new world.

Máni’s glow is not an fierce blaze but the quiet illumination that reveals what is hidden: the light of dreams, secrets, intuition, and prophecy. The völur of old were said to read fate beneath his silver gaze, trusting him to unveil paths otherwise cloaked in darkness.

🌞 Sunna: The Radiant Keeper of Time 🌞

In the norse myths, the Sun is Sunna/ Sól, The golden-bright goddess who carries the life-giving fire across the sky. Born of Mundilfari and Glaur sister to Máni.

Sunna guides the sun’s chariot, drawn by her swift steeds Árvakr “Early Riser” and Alsviðr “All Swift”.

Beneath their hooves lie the sparks of Múspellsheimr, forged into a blazing wheel that lights the Nine Worlds. To shield Midgard from the burning force of her radiance, the gods placed the great shield "Svalinn" before her, for the Grímnismál warns that if Svalinn ever fell, the world would scorch and perish.

Sunna’s journey is not free from peril. She is forever pursued by the wolf Sköll, son of Fenrir, whose hunger drives him to chase her blazing path.

The norse believed that eclipses were moments when Sköll snapped close upon her heels. And in the prophecies of Ragnarök, it is foretold that Sköll will at last devour Sunna but even then, the light is not lost, A daughter will rise from her light, brighter still, to shine over the new world that emerges after the twilight of the gods.

Sunna’s presence was felt in the daily norse life. 🌞

Her warmth coaxed seed from soil, dried the fish racks along the Þing, gilded the fjords and fields, and carried the promise that even after the longest winter night, dawn would return. Her daily ride marked the order of the cosmos, and her ceaseless flight from Sköll reminded all that light is precious, pursued, and never fully safe but also never truly extinguished.

On this Sunnudagr, the day that bears her name, let Sunna’s golden glow remind you that your own journey: though chased by shadows, moves ever toward renewal.

🌞 Hail Sunna, Shining One,
Keeper of the Golden Path,
Bringer of Dawn. 🌞

🌙 Mánadagr: Honoring Máni, Keeper of the Moon’s Path 🌙

On this Mánadagr, the Day of Máni, we honor the moon-god who sails the dark sky in his shining chariot, guiding the night across the realms. The Norse marked time by his path, for every month called--> mánuðr: followed his waxing and waning light. He shaped the turning of the seasons, the timing of blóts, and even the flow of fate itself.

In the Eddas, we are told that Máni and his sister Sól were the children of Mundilfari and Gaul , so radiant in their beauty that the gods placed them in the heavens to steer the courses of the sun and moon. Máni drives his chariot across the sky, ever pursued by the wolf Hati Hróðvitnisson, who hungers to devour his light. No matter how many nights the shadows chase him, Máni returns waxing full again, a symbol of renewal and endurance. 🌕

From Snorri’s Gylfaginning, we learn that Máni is not alone on his journey. He took from Midgard two mortal children: Hjúki and Bil who walked from the well Byrgir, carrying the pole Sægr with the pail Símul filled with water. Máni drew them up to the heavens, and they have followed him ever since. Their father was Viðfinnr, though his tale is lost. When you look upon the moon’s, you may still glimpse their shadows walking beside him.

To the ancestors, Máni’s phases guided ritual and rhythm. The new moon marked beginnings and oaths; the full moon was sacred to seiðr, foresight, and power.
Beneath his light, the Norse honored time itself the unseen weaving of wyrd, the pulse that connects all things.

Tonight, step outside and lift your gaze to Maní.
Galdr-> Whisper softly:

“Hail Máni, silver wanderer,
Rider of the night sky,
Keeper of tides and time,
May your light reveal the hidden paths.”

☀️🔥 Sunna (Sól): She Who Rides the Sun-Chariot 🐺🌞

"Across the sky she rides, chased by wolves, bearing light for gods and men alike."

Today on Sunnudagr, we honor Sunna (also called sol in other poetic sources), the radiant goddess of the sun in Norse mythology. She is not merely a symbol of warmth or day, but as a divine force of cosmic order, resilience, and inevitable fate.

Sunna is one of the few solar goddesses in, embodying sacred fire, movement, and the unstoppable wheel of time.

🌿 Who Is Sunna?

In the Poetic Edda, sunna is the daughter of Mundilfari, given her name for her radiant beauty. The gods place her in the heavens to drive the sun-chariot, pulled by two steeds: Árvakr ("Early-Waker") and Alsviðr ("All-Swift").

Behind her races the monstrous wolf Sköll, who seeks to devour her. And in the end times of Ragnarök, he will succeed. Yet her light will not die with her, for she gives birth to a daughter just as radiant, who will ride in her place.

Sunna does not simply represent sunlight: she is the life-giver, the time-keeper.

🔆 Symbols & Associations⤵️

🌞The Sun

🟡Golden wheels, radiant circles, solar runes (especially Sowilo ᛋ)

🐺Wolves ( Sköll and Hati)

🐎Horses, chariots, and solar discs

🔥Fire, light, and time

🕯️ How to Honor Sunna on Sunnudagr⤵️

▪︎ Rise with the sun and offer her the first light of your day.

▪︎ Burn sacred herbs associated with fire and clarity (juniper, frankincense, mugwort).

▪︎ Create a solar talisman: using gold, sunstone, or the Sowilo rune: to carry with you.

▪︎ Speak your intentions or prayers aloud at noon, when her power is at its peak.

¤ Reflect on what in your life needs illumination: What shadow must now be seen?

Gylfaginning (Prose Edda, Snorri Sturluson): tells of her origin and celestial role

🗣️ Reflections⤵️

Though chased, Sunna never falters. She does not run from fear, but continues riding with strength and duty, bringing light even as darkness looms behind her. In her, we find the embodiment of persistence, clarity, and courage in the face of inevitable change.

Whether you honor her as a goddess, a celestial power, or a symbol of sacred endurance:

☀️May her light guide your steps today and all days.☀️
