Not long ago, Madison resident Phyllis Rhodes struggled with something many people take for granted: simply getting in and out of the shower.

Today, she is traveling the world.

After her Parkinson’s diagnosis, Phyllis was determined to keep moving forward. Through Huntsville Hospital’s Parkinson’s Care Clinic, she found the support and tools to rebuild her strength and confidence.

“If it wasn’t for them, I don’t even know where I would be today,” Phyllis said. “The program is fabulous. I have benefited so much.”

Now, her calendar is filled with time with family, regular classes and trips to places she once feared she might never see.

This Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we are proud to support patients and families here in Madison with resources that help people stay active, independent and living life on their terms.

Kudos to our Plant Operations team for winning the HRO (Highly Reliable Organization) Hero Award! 👏

During the last winter storm, this incredible group went above and beyond—staying overnight and waking up early to clear icy parking lots and sidewalks across our campus. Because of their dedication, patients, visitors and staff had a safe place to walk and drive during challenging conditions. ❄️

These behind-the-scenes all stars also helped other hospital employees get home safely, showing true compassion and teamwork when it mattered most. 🤝

They truly embody our motto: Be Safe. Be Caring. Be Kind. ❤️

Thank you, Plant Ops, for all you do to keep our hospital safe and running smoothly! 🏥

Please join us in congratulating Trent Reynolds on being named our April Employee of the Month! 👏

Trent’s impact goes far beyond his role as lead clinical pharmacist. As one colleague shared, “He truly sets the emotional tone of our team, leading with kindness, humility, and steady confidence that makes even the busiest days feel manageable.”

Known for investing in those around him, Trent takes time to mentor, encourage, and ensure every team member feels heard. His leadership may not be loud, but it is constant, thoughtful, and grounded in genuine care.

“Because of Trent," another co-worker noted, "our pharmacy feels less like just a workplace and more like a team that looks out for one another."

Thank you, Trent, for the integrity, compassion, and heart you bring to both your colleagues and our patients every day. We’re so lucky to have you on our team! ❤️

It’s nothing but net here at Madison Hospital! 🏀🏥

To celebrate the spirit of March Madness, our incredible employees took a brief timeout for a fun Hoops Challenge. Whether it was sinking a three-pointer in the cafeteria or a quick free throw in the hallway, the energy was high and the competition was friendly!

Participants walked away with some hospital swag and sweet treats, but the real win was the camaraderie. In health care, just like on the court, success is a team effort. 🤝

No One Wins Alone. One Hospital, One Team. 💚

Please join us in congratulating Sandy Wing, surgical scrub assistant, for being recognized as our latest Highly Reliable Organization (HRO) Hero Award winner! 🏆

Sandy recently demonstrated exactly what high reliability looks like in action. With her sharp attention to detail, she noticed that our decontamination room — meant to be set to negative pressure — was incorrectly set to positive pressure.

That quick observation made a big difference. Positive pressure could have allowed contaminants to spread to surrounding areas and tools. Thanks to Sandy’s vigilance, the issue was corrected before it could impact care.

💡 Great catch, Sandy! Your commitment to doing things the right way helps keep our patients and surgery team safe every day. 💪

📣 Have you heard? Madison Hospital was just named a “Dementia Friendly Alabama” hospital –the first in our region, and one of only five in the entire state!

Our journey began in 2019 with a simple question from a friend: “Can you do something to help?” Since then, we’ve been on a mission to adapt our hospital for the 100,000-plus Alabamians living with dementia.

What does "Dementia Friendly" look like at Madison Hospital?

🧠 Specialized Training: Every staff member — from nurses to cafeteria servers — undergoes dementia-sensitivity training, including virtual reality simulations to experience life from a patient's perspective.

💜 Visual Cues: Look for the "Forget Me Not" flower magnets and purple pillows. These remind our team to adapt their communication and care for the unique needs of patients with dementia.

🧵 Fidget Sleeves: Hand-crafted by volunteers to keep patients’ hands safely occupied.

🤝 Community Support: We host support group meetings and expert-led events for families navigating this journey.

“Since we opened in 2012, we decided that we wanted to be different,” says our President Mary Lynne Wright. “We’re making sure we get everything correct for our dementia patients because it’s important.”

A huge thank you to Dementia Friendly Alabama and our incredible staff for helping us create a safer, more compassionate space for everyone. 👏
