First, I want to thank everyone for celebrating my achievement!! Seeing all of the responses had me crying snotty tears 😭😭😭 I love you all so much! 💜💜
2. I’d especially love to thank Kerida for their reply because it reminded me of an ask!
Along with nursing school, I am also currently working on a Certificate in Global Health program at UW Madison. I just finished the first semester and my mind is blown! There is a field experience requirement as part of the program and I have had the incredible opportunity to design my own field study: In June, I will be traveling to St. Lucia and working at St. Jude’s Hospital on their Labor and Delivery floor to learn about the birth culture from their nurses and nurse midwives, and engaging with Public Health partners to study the resources and support systems in place for reproductive health care. My research will examine the breadth of understanding and incorporation of doula support in Saint Lucian birth culture.
This is literally the dream. I am so incredibly grateful and excited to be able to pursue my passion in my home country. To learn from my people, the history of birth in the West Indies and what birth practices are today?? Life changing.
Field experiences are not cheap and federal aid is nonexistent for me. Historically, black people have had incredible economic barriers to experiences like this and it still holds true for me, today. However, I believe in this so much and I know how intensely the knowledge I gain from this experience will positively impact my community, that I’m will do whatever it takes to make it happen.
It would be a great graduation gift if you can support me and my field experience in any way- small amount, medium amount, large amount (😉), or a share, I would be eternally grateful. I have a fundraiser going and I can also accept donations to the various apps and such. The information will be in the comments!!
