Happy Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. Now is the time to celebrate, featuring ancient traditions such as Stonehenge alignments, Yule logs, Roman Saturnalia, and Japanese yuzu baths, which celebrate the sun's gradual return. Of course, there are also many Christmas celebrations happening in just a few days. Enjoy every day and send love to your friends and family.

Welcome, December, you have already brought the chill. Parts of Virginia are expecting a wintry mix overnight, sending many students (and teachers) into a state of anticipation.

Welcome October! My favorite month of the year!

Happy Fall, Ya'll. My favorite time of the year is here. I am ready to break out my sweaters and ensure I have plenty of firewood. I don't usually partake in pumpkin-flavored coffee, but I did have a pumpkin chai latte, which helped get me in the spirit of the season. Even the weather has cooperated, with temps in the 70s.

I don't know what it is about entering the cooler calendar months that makes me gravitate to my collection of cookbooks. They sit collecting dust eight months of the year, but as soon as it gets cool, out they come. I love a well-appointed cookbook with intriguing recipes and glossy pictures.

The first thing I do I look at the dessert section and then soups, stews, and casseroles. For me, it's all about the comfort food. I don't get much of an opportunity to cook creatively during the week with work and picking up the kids from after-school activities; this is where the slow cooker is a friend. The weekend is when I can devote myself to spending more time in the kitchen creating. I still have not mastered meal prepping, but I think about it often.
