Depression isn’t always about feeling sad. For many, it’s about not feeling much at all.

Emerging research suggests ketamine may rapidly improve anhedonia, the loss of pleasure and motivation, sometimes independent of overall mood changes.

In : Edition 12, we explore what the science says about ketamine’s impact on reward pathways and why this may matter for treatment-resistant depression.

Mental health isn’t just about feeling calm — it’s also about reclaiming vigor: your appetite for life.

Depression, burnout, and trauma can drain vitality from the nervous system itself. Healing often looks like curiosity returning. Energy returning. The desire to participate in life again.

Sometimes the biggest sign of healing isn’t happiness. It’s vigor.

Depression is not simply sadness—it’s a multifactorial mental health condition involving changes in brain chemistry, neural circuitry, and the body’s stress response.

It can present as low mood, but also as numbness, fatigue, loss of interest, and cognitive strain—often without a clear external cause.

When symptoms persist and begin to affect daily functioning, it moves beyond a temporary state and may require structured support. Swipe through the carousel to learn more and reach out to us at www.mindandbrainlink.com/contact-faq for additional support or click the link in bio.

Dr. Aiyer presented at the 23rd Annual Neurotech Convention! Thanks to Society For Brain Mapping & Therapeutics for hosting an awesome first day.

His comments below!:

It was great to be engaged in a discussion and be involved in a panel of experts on an evidence based discussion of treatments for both chronic pain and mental health.

Some learning points from my presentation:

💡 While not FDA approved, there is some literature suggesting that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can potentially be a treatment for chronic low back pain and Fibromyalgia, as shown in our review:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37213707/

💡 Large scale studies have shown that patients with chronic pain, 40–50% will have a mental health co-morbid condition (depression or anxiety). More importantly, patients with chronic pain have over a 3x more likelihood of having a mental health disorder compared to patients with no chronic pain.

💡 For many decades, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), has proven to be extremely effective for treatment resistant depression. While newer FDA approved options are available (Vagal Nerve Stimulation - FDA approved 2005, TMS - FDA Approved 2008), ECT should still be highly considered by clinicians in this space.

Clearly, neuromodulation continues to play an integral role as a treatment option for both chronic pain and mental health.

Concerns about memory and cognition often come up with ketamine therapy.

Current evidence, including long-term studies, shows no evidence of

progressive or clinically meaningful cognitive decline in medically supervised use. Short-term effects can occur, but they are typically transient.

Ketamine Korner: Edition 11 breaks down what the research actually says.
