4 Signs Your Horse May Need Massage.
✨Save for later!✨

1. Muscle Tension:
- Muscle tension doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes it shows up as stiffness, sensitivity, or uneven movement.
Regular bodywork helps muscles soften and function the way they’re meant to.

2. Behavioral Changes:
- Behavior is communication.
When a horse’s attitude changes, it’s often the body asking for support…not discipline.

3. Performance Changes:
- Performance isn’t just about riding, it’s about how the body feels doing the work.
Small changes often point to underlying tension.

4. Recovery Time:
- Recovery matters just as much as the ride.
A horse that recovers well stays sound, comfortable, and willing over time.

Your horse is an athlete!

Every time you ride you are asking them to do things that are unnatural to the horse, but that is not a bad thing. We get to have a best friends to take into the mountains, jump, race around barrels, and rope cows! They are hard working animals that need maintenance for the unnatural things we ask of them.

Jumping, trail riding, pulling calves, rodeo, and having a saddle on your horses back means they will most likely be muscularly unbalanced. When a muscle is out of balance it becomes a snowball affect with other muscles. Atrophy of the muscles becomes prevalent. Soreness can occur and even injuries.

Through massage, muscles can become balanced and revived. Hollow muscles fill out and soreness fades, which prevents injuries. Massage also relaxes the mind from any built up stress. It allows your horse to feel their best and perform their best!

Let’s be sure to treat our horses like the athletes they are!

Buck, head tossing, biting, stomping, head shaking, twitching are all forms of communication and they might not mean what you think.

Horses are constantly communicating with us. How they communicate is usually misinterpreted to them being silly, naughty, or mean. This might not be the case. Take a closer look.

While horses can be silly, mean, and naughty, most of the time they are communicating pain or discomfort…especially when those behaviors are not common for your horse on a normal daily basis.

Next time you cinch up and your horse is cinchy, ask yourself, “is he in pain?” When your horse refuses to turn a certain direction and you have to force them to turn, ask yourself, “is my saddle pinching her?”

I challenge you to stop and think the next time your horse bites, stomps, is cinchy, pins their ears, tosses they head, etc and really think about what else it could be rather than what you normally categorize their behavior as. Do some investigating. Look at their body. Study their movement. If you are unsure, booking a massage is always a great step to rule out if it’s a muscle injury, poor saddle fit, or other issue involving muscles.

Slow down and listen to your horse. 🖤

Is your horse cinchy? Usually, when a horse is cinchy, that means there is be a problem, not them just being naughty.
In my experience as a equine massage therapist, most of the horses I worked on that were cinchy had poor saddle/cinch fits and/or sore Ascending Pectoral and Latissimus Dorsi muscles. Through fitting corrections and massage, all my clients have improved and no longer are sensitive to being cinched up. Horses can also become sensitive to cinching when the cinch is too tight too long, improper cinch length which can lead to over-tightening, and pinching which can happen with stiff cinches.

“Out where the wind blows sharp and dry,
Beneath the snowy peaks of mountains high,
A cowboy bows his head to pray,
For blessings gathered each and every day,
While he counts his cattle with his dog and his ride,
He prays “oh, Lord, forever be by my side.”
With dusty boots and silver spurs,
He’s thankful for this life that’s for sure,
For faithful friends and horses true,
And skies that stretch forever blue.
He rides the range with grateful pride,
Thanksgiving spirit by his saddle side,
For simple joys no gold can buy—
A thankful heart under God’s Big Sky.”

Many blessings to you all. Always count your blessings, everyday…not just one day a year🩵

It’s that time of year where the weather is getting colder, riding slows down for some, and others are preparing for winter horse sports.

Our horse’s routine is adjusting which means their bodies are changing too.

Doing less work means muscles become tense from lack of movement, this can cause a snowball effect of physical problems. The lack of movement and physical activity can also effect your horses mental health.

Preparing for winter sports is great! Keeping your horse moving during the longer winter months helps keep their mind occupied. With changing from summer to winter sports there are different physical strains on the muscles. This is due to different weather and landscape conditions. Horse’s often become stiff and sore faster after a training session when the temperatures are colder.

Bodywork can be your horse’s best friend in the winter…to help lift your horse’s spirit and stimulate their muscles. Cold, stiff muscles can benefit greatly from a massage session by helping with strengthening, warming, reviving, and allowing a wider range of motion to the muscles. It also helps relax your horse from stress.

Book your reviving winter massages today to help keep your horse feeling tiptop through the upcoming cold months!

🚩Behavioral Red Flags🚩
Horses are funny creatures and sometimes do silly things, but acting goofy can be a a behavioral red flag. Sometimes these behaviors can be signs of discomfort, pain, not enough movement, or even stress.

🚩 Head shaking, weaving, or cribbing:
All of these behaviors are a coping mechanism when a need is missing in an equine’s life, such as proper natural movement (if they are stalled) or exercise. It can also be caused by poor riding, such as excessive pulling on the reins or improper saddle fit. These missing needs and improper riding can also cause muscle soreness and atrophy over time.

🚩 Yawning in Excess:
Nope, not because your horse is tired, it’s a way of releasing build up stress from many factors…excessive pulling on the mouth, lack of dental care/improper dental care or stressful situations, just to name a few.

Horses are smart animals that are constantly communicating how they feel. It’s our job to listen and try to understand what they are trying to tell us. Next time your horse is acting “goofy” take a second to listen to them. Are they in pain? Is there something lacking in their life? Could they be stressed?

Custom Massages:
All massages are customized to your
horse’s needs. Whether they are retired, a high performance athlete, a hard working ranch horse, or a youngster, there is something for them all! For more information or to schedule an appointment, call or text.

Schedule your equine a massage today to get them conditioned and feeling great for the upcoming season!

Equid Alphaherpesvirus 1🦠
has been confirmed in Texas. Montana and other states have been advised to take precautions.
Going forward I will be taking precautions for the health and safety of everyone’s horses. You can also find a list of EHV-1 symptoms below to identify possibly infected equine.

✨Dusty Creek Equine Massage EHV-1 Precautions✨

1. After each massage session I will be disinfecting my shoes, hands, and changing clothes before attending another session and seeing new horses.

2. If you are unsure of your horses health and may believe your horse has EHV-1 symptoms, I highly advise testing by your veterinarian for confirmation. Once your horse has a veterinarian confirmed clean bill of health we can schedule your horses next massage.

3. If I arrive and observe any symptoms of EHV-1 in any horses on site without being told before arrival, I will decline services and a small travel fee will be charged.

Thank you for your understanding during this time. My love and prayers go out to those affected, all our veterinarians, and everyone in the horse industry. 🩵
