✨Pilates : Classical or Contemporary ✨
There are 2 styles of Pilates: Classical & Contemporary. Both carry the same core principles which are…
🌬️Breath: Fundamental for facilitating controlled movement.
💬Concentration: Requires mental focus on the quality and intention of each movement. Facilitates the mind/body connection.
💪🏻Centering: Emphasizing the body’s core (aka “Powerhouse”) as the origin of stable movement. This is where you will realize how many muscles you have in your abdomen and how little you’ve used most of them 🤪.
🕹️Control: Focus on deliberate muscular movement throughout every exercise. Enhances the mind/body connection.
👌🏼Precision: Working on executing movements with exactness for maximum benefit.
Classical is a true low-intensity workout that follows the original movements created by Joesph Pilates (aka Contrology). As someone who has a background in all things high-intensity, I had a hard time accepting classical as a “real workout” before I started training. Once I learned how to ✨properly execute✨ each movement, I was humbled real quick 😅. It’s easy to underestimate classical but once you learn how to engage the correct muscles, incorporate breath work, force control and eliminate all momentum, the game changes!
Contemporary has the classical foundation but utilizes more props, weights and brings a higher intensity level. If you feel classical is too slow paced for your liking, contemporary is probably what you’ll feel is the better fit. This is the concept our Muscle Mat classes are centered on.
Classical & contemporary are rooted in the same principles so you can’t go wrong with either style. Your preference may change for various reasons so choose what suits you best in the moment because movement is medicine 🤍
