Given the fact it's 107°f at 11am, I would say the caterpillar tunnels from equipped with overhead irrigation and 30% shade is the one of the main reasons our crops are surviving.

Soil health is another reason the crops are surviving. Our heavy clay soil holds and absorbs water and nutrients. This has increased over time by properly managing the soil.

The big question is will we be able to continue with increasing water costs, and the very great possiblity that we might not have water for crops after this year?

Soil test results are in. Pretty standard for what we have seen in Arizona. Low boron is common as in this case. Now we just make the adjustments based on the recommendations.

This shows the value of the test. We would have spent a lot of time and money to spread compost or amendments over this area when it doesn't need it.

Soil testing is key to successful growing. We do one a year to make sure our soil is on track.

The process is simple, dig a hole 4-6" deep and collect some of the soil at the bottom of the hole. Do as many holes as necessary to get an accurate picture of the soil. Mix all the samples and put the required amount in a bag. Check with lab for amount needed. Our lab usually wants 4 cups minimum.

Then just label the samples and fill out the chain of custody. Drop at the lab or send through the mail.

The cost of the test is minimal with a good lab. Knowing exactly what the soil needs before the crops are planted saves money on amendments. I wouldn't grow without one.

Making it rain the desert! Love the sound of the overhead irrigation hitting the plastic. The plants love it and it's a great spot to cool down after pulling weeds.

I did the tomatoes in a Florida weave trellis this year. I like using this method because it's easy to assemble and disassemble. It's a little easier on the plants because the strings don't wrap around the stems. Also works great for peppers and eggplants.
