Some people grow up in homes where no one yells, no one hits, and yet something essential is missing.

There’s love, but not presence.
Conversation, but not listening.
Care, but not curiosity.

That’s what Dr. Gabor Maté calls the wound of absence: when a child’s emotions are not mirrored, validated, or welcomed.

You might recognize it as an adult when you struggle to name your feelings, apologize too often, or find yourself comforting others instead of expressing what you need.

These aren’t signs of weakness, they’re traces of adaptation.

The child you once were learned to survive by staying small, calm, agreeable, anything to stay connected.

The problem is that strategy doesn’t end when childhood does.

It follows us into relationships, work, and self-talk.

Healing begins not with analysis, but with acknowledgment.

Take a quiet moment this week and ask yourself:

What feelings did I have to hide to keep the peace?

Don’t rush to answer. Just notice.
