OPA Statement regarding the war in Ukraine

Throughout the past few weeks, the world has witnessed increased hostilities and military expansion along the Russian and Ukraine border by Russian governmental actors. The Ohio Psychological Association (OPA) is deeply troubled by Russia’s military invasion of the Ukraine and the ensuing humanitarian crisis unfolding.

Our Association stands in solidarity with those living in Ukraine, our membership, their relatives of Ukrainian descent, Ukrainian refugees, and the world community that is impacted by these threats to life, human rights, and Ukrainian society. We also want to acknowledge our support for individuals of Russian descent that have been impacted by forces outside of their control. OPA is committed to providing our knowledge and support as psychologists to the community regarding the impact this may have on multidimensional well-being in both the present and future.

We invite our OPA membership to review the following resources for more information:

Greetings,
My name is Joseph, and I am a clinical psychologist; I have been a psychologist for more than 25 years. I have worked with people of all ages, from early childhood to octogenarians, and I treat depression, anxiety, stress, and other psychological problems. I have specialized training in anxiety, stress, trauma, and abuse, as well as grief and loss. I have worked with men, women, and LGBTQ persons. Additionally, I have a master’s degree in Child Development. with experience in parenting and family issues, and expertise with Adolescents.
I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and we will work together to improve psychological flexibility while working to discern what matters to you in your life and how to take committed action to achieve that life for you. We will utilize Mindfulness in our work together.
Each person is unique and has strengths and skills to create a meaningful and satisfying life.
We understand our lives by means of the stories that we tell ourselves or that others tell us about us; we will explore those stories together to learn which stories move our lives forward, and which stories might hold us back

Online Psychotherapy

Online psychotherapy has received significant attention recently due to the restrictions related to the Covid-19 Pandemic. But online psychotherapy has been around for more than ten years. Other names for online psychotherapy are Telehealth, Telementalhealth; Telepsychology; E-Therapy; and Distance Therapy. There may be more names by the time I publish this.

The distinguishing feature of online psychotherapy is that the patient and the therapist are not in the same physical space— such as an office. They may be in the same town or even on the same block; they may be hundreds of miles apart. Online psychotherapy opens several opportunities for both the therapist and the patient.

As a psychologist, I can provide services for persons who live in areas where mental health services are unavailable, such as rural communities or cities where transportation is difficult or unavailable. Some patients have a hard time going out to public places due to anxiety can work on their anxiety without leaving their homes. Some people have concerns about being seen going to a therapist's office, and they appreciate the opportunity to meet with a therapist from their home.

Online psychotherapy has been found effective in addressing many kinds of mental health problems; it is as effective as in-person psychotherapy in many cases. There are some cases in which in-person psychotherapy is not appropriate—such as persons in an acute stage of mental illness or are in an acute crisis or suicidal; in these cases, in-person therapy may be more appropriate.

Shalom Counseling Services provides online psychotherapy and pastoral counseling for children, parents, and other persons. We offer services that are open, accepting, compassionate and caring; we offer services tailored to your needs.
