Today should have been the 97th birthday of one of the Philippines' most famous women scientists, entomologist Clare Baltazar. Her studies of Philippine hymenoptera began in 1950 and she continued to discover new species of native wasps into the 1970s, writing the key text Philippine Insects: An Introduction in 1979. She was named a National Scientist of the Philippines in 2001, and her efforts led to better pest control programs throughout the islands. Unfortunately, she passed away four months ago, on July 13, so we can't pass on our best wishes to her for a happy 97th, but we can recognize the decades of work she did in an age and place that did not make being a woman scientist easy.
