Tyree Guyton named 2026 Eminent Artist!

We are thrilled to share that Detroit-born artist Tyree Guyton has been selected as the 2026 Kresge Eminent Artist, recognizing a lifetime of extraordinary artistic achievement and impact on Detroit’s cultural landscape.

Best known as the creator of the internationally acclaimed Heidelberg Project, Guyton has spent four decades transforming Heidelberg Street into one of the most influential outdoor art environments in the world: a living, evolving work rooted love for the city and its people.

“Surreal,” Guyton said upon learning of the award. “I got real quiet. I couldn't believe it…Me, chosen.”

Alongside the Heidelberg Project, Guyton has sustained a prolific studio practice for more than 45 years with work held in major collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Studio Museum in Harlem and Centre Pompidou in Paris.

As the 18th artist to receive this honor, Guyton joins a lineage of artists whose work has shaped Detroit’s creative history and future. The award includes a $100,000 cash prize, a short film premiering this spring, and a monograph to be published this fall.

This year’s selection was made by a panel of local artists and arts professionals, who applauded Guyton’s lasting contributions to the city’s artistic landscape.

📣 Coming soon: Michigan's Rural Heritage Partnership grant program!

The Michigan SHPO has received a $750,000 grant from the National Park Service (NPS). Michigan’s grant will be used to fund the Rural Heritage Partnership Program, through which the SHPO will provide grant funding to eligible applicants to complete repairs and improvements to qualified historic buildings in small, rural communities statewide. The goal of the program is to not only address immediate needs in these areas but also to promote long-term strategies that convey the importance of investing in our heritage assets as a meaningful component of economic development and community identity.

Through the program, the SHPO also seeks to strengthen its assistance and support to the state’s rural areas, which is an ongoing goal of the office.
